Klopp: This season will not be one for the history books

Jurgen Klopp understands the frustration for his players and fans alike with the current situation but he is adamant that there will be a way out of the current malaise sooner rather than later.

The Reds had their two match winning run halted in the league on Saturday evening playing out a extremely dour 0-0 draw with Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park.

The visitors were also hit by another injury blow on the eve of the game with in-form striker Darwin Nunez ruled out with a shoulder injury that he suffered against Newcastle last week.

And his absence was evident in a game low on clear cut chances and general quality with the home team yet to win a league game in 2023 and Liverpool playing their first game since being thrashed 5-2 against Real Madrid in the first leg of their Round of 16 tie.

Liverpool under Klopp have made it a habit in setting club records and winning honours, but there will none of that celebration for this campaign with the pure focus being able to clinch a top four berth which at this stage looks like a uphill battle.

Klopp is never one to talk down his side but he is also a realist and speaking after this result, he knows he has a job to keep the morale high as ESPN reported.

" Look, I see it in your eyes and in the players' eyes as well: it looks like we lost the game. We didn't. It is like that. We cannot suffer because of our own history. That would now be really a joke.

“This will not be the season that everybody when you have the history books and say 'let's have a look at that season again and again and again.' There will not be big movies about it and stuff like this but we have to go through it anyway.

“It is not always 'here we won, great, oh now we dropped points, oh rubbish.' We have to keep going. Take the things and go again, that's what we will do.

"Nothing really changed tonight. You can see it two ways: we didn't win, that sounds negative. We have a point more than before. I think that sounds pretty positive. So you can choose."

Veteran midfielder James Milner echoed the thoughts of his manager.

“We'd like a better performance and three points but we didn't get that.

"We have to keep going. We're our harshest critics. It's important we don't listen to the noise outside. It's down to us. We're the only ones who can change it."

While the Reds wasted this opportunity to significantly cut the gap on those above them, they have a catch-up game midweek against Wolves where hopefully they pick up maximum points.

It has all been said at this point now.

Everybody knows the score - Klopp, his backroom team, the fans, even the players and even surely the owners.

We just have to make it to the end of the season, find a way of squeezing as much as we can out of what we have to finish as best as we can and then hopefully in the summer the overdue rebuild can begin in earnest.

Klopp surely knows what he needs, hopefully he will be given what he needs to get it and hopefully he gets it.

Everything else now at this stage is just noise and frankly just going round in circles.

All not helped by Man U winning a trophy or three this season either.

How could anyone see that draw as a positive? I don't get it.

He must be sick to death of having to talk about it all the time when he knows there is fuck all he can really do about it all.

He is a naturally positive feller and he does not want to come out and call them out too much - he knows it is shit, he knows the team is done as it is, he knows he has a rebuild to do and he knows what that looks like - he's stuck with what he has just like we are as fans in the meantime and he has to keep morale up - what we saw yesterday and what we have seen all season is a fair reflection of what we currently are...

It isn't some baffling puzzle that answers as to why it is happening need to be found, or some major underperformance that is "unacceptable" and a kick up the arse will sort, or just a bad day at the office - this is what we are, what we saw yesterday is par for the course when you start a midfield 3 of Naby Keita, Jordan Henserson and James Milner in 2023.

Naby Keita's abject performance was no surprise....what Hendo did was just typical of what he does and all he can do now....Milner was well just what he is and did what he does, he should not be needed to start games now and it is not his fault he has to

....Combined the end result is going to give you what we got and will do so time and time again.

It will continue to be the case as it has been all season until the end of the season - there will be odd days better than the norm - ala Man City and Bournemouth, a few worse than it - ala Brentford, Wolves and Brighton and plenty just like it as there has been from day one of this season.

We have won 10 of our 23 league games which means we have failed to win in 13 - not winning is more the norm than winning, we don't win many football matches now - we have lost more than we have drawn - so a draw is actually not that bad a result for us based on those facts.

Hopefully the summer will see us fix the problems that have led us to where we are, although our delay in dealing with them means they are worse than they needed to be now - but everything now until the end of the season that is said is just noise and is frankly best largely ignored.

Kloppo may be wrong  on this. If we don't pull our finger out this year will go down as our worst finish in PL history.

If it is it will also be our worst finish since we returned to top flight in 62/63.
