Klopp: The fans pushed us over the line against Tottenham

Jurgen Klopp has hailed the significance of the supporters after the Reds thrilling 2-1 victory against Tottenham at Anfield on Sunday.

Liverpool landed the first blow in the heavyweight contest with Roberto Firmino on the end of yet another Andy Robertson pin-point cross after 16 minutes.

Robertson's ninth assist of the season is the most by a defender in the Premier League since Leighton Baines contributed 11 assists to Everton's cause in the 2010/11 campaign.

Despite coming into the contest in a poor run of form, the visitors were not downhearted by the setback and were intent on dealing Liverpool a damaging blow to their title chances.

The North London outfit controlled much of the second half and scored a deserved equaliser through Lucas Moura with 20 minutes remaining.

There now seemed to be only one winner with Tottenham suddenly full of confidence but they wasted a guilt-edged opportunity when Moussa Sissoko blazed over the bar with under ten minutes remaining.

That big scare seemed to spark the Reds into action again and they got the reward albeit through a large slice of fortune from a Toby Alderweireld own goal, after Hugo Lloris dropped the ball  onto the leg of the Belgian defender from what seemed to be a tame header by Mo Salah and then witnessed it dribble over the line.

Despite the scrappy nature of how the winner came about, Klopp has been in the game long enough to not care too much how goals come by.

Sky Sports reported the manager as saying:

"I said to the lads there are 500 ways to win a football game and today was slightly ugly. Who cares in the end? Who cares? That's the situation.

During the second half of the season, there has been a school of thought that the supporters could prove more of a hinderance than a help due to the fact of how desperate they are to see the team lift the Premier League trophy.

However Klopp who is big on positive energy coming from the stands, only had praise after the vital victory.

"The crowd was outstanding, incredible atmosphere. They were really here to push us and at the end it helps.

" It's a big change, a big improvement. We have to get used to the situation, it's all good. It is only positive. 

Klopp admitted he was not happy with the way his team played in the second 45 minutes and felt the equaliser was something they needed to get them going again. 

"I was not happy that we conceded a goal but maybe we needed it.

"First half we had chances but second half we could not relax, a little bit too late here. They changed from five to four, and we tried to changed the system as well."

Klopp knows the magnitude of the challenge which still lies ahead for his team.

"City last year were champions and are still pretty good, look full of greed and desire and whatever else. We have to fight like crazy.

"I am really happy we don't have any breaks now. We compete with one of the, or the, best team in world for one position and that is really hard."

"If at the end of the season we would be first, it must be kind of a fairy tale, miracle, whatever."
