Klopp: Previous experience will help in push for top four qualification

Jurgen Klopp is looking to use this week as a springboard to put Liverpool into serious top four contention.

The Reds are currently sitting nine points adrift of Tottenham, however they have two games in hand of the North London outfit.

One of those is against Wolves this evening as the two teams meet for the fourth time in 2023.

Despite sitting in the lower reaches of the table, the West Midlands outfit will be anything but daunted having registered a 3-0 win just a few weeks ago while also bringing a second string team to Anfield earning a deserved 2-2 draw in the FA Cup 3rd round tie.

Speaking ahead of this fixture (per Metro), Klopp is optimistic that his players can focus on the job at hand using their experiences of the past, most recently the Covid impacted 2020/21 campaign.

“It’s a super important week. We cannot ignore that. We have two home games. I would love to give the season a little push in this week.

“It helps because it was us (sealing a top four berth) We don’t have to tell them a story of another club or team.

“We have a lot of stories to tell where it went well in the last few years, with long winning streaks and going unbeaten at home and so on.

“There are 15 games left and that’s 45 points. If there is a club that can do it I really think it is us. Honestly. But there is no alternative to results. So we need results and for results we need performances."

With hopes of silverware this season all but extinguished after the heavy defeat to Real Madrid in the Champions League last week, the remaining league games shape as a cup competition in their own right.

And Klopp says confidence from achieving that goal, can lead to bigger things down the road.

“We have a future together: the immediate future from tomorrow on but there is a bigger picture as well.

“We will strike back in general but now we have to make sure that we really squeeze everything out of this season that we can get."

Tonight is absolutely vital to make that a reality.

Yeah, whatever about the performance, the Palace result was okay in isolation. If we can't beat Wolves at home though we're screwed.

Hope he is right, I cannot see this team getting the top 4.

It would take a turnaround in form over last 15 games that would be quite something.

Let's say 70 pts is the usual 4th place pts aim.

We need 34 from 15 to get to 70.

We have  so far got 36 from 23.

That is some upturn that is required.

Basically what used to be title form is required from here - hard to see where that sort of improvement is going to come from.

We had a not too dissimilar turnaround two years ago. Klopp's teams seem to go on streaks of one kind or another, mostly excellent but occasionally awful.

The Wolves and Man United games will tell us a lot.

At the moment Spurs are 4th. On current form, they'll end up with 68.4 points. We'd need 32/33 points from 15 games, about 2.2 points per game.

We started the season very poorly but that has turned around, maybe not the performances but the results have slightly improved. In our opening 13 league games, we won only 19 points.

In our last 10 games we have won 17 points. In our last 5 games we have won 8 points. Win tonight and they become 20/11 and 11/6. It's not a huge jump for us to get to 2.2 ppg from that form, especially with a more favourable injury list and they losing Bentancour for the season and Lloris for another few weeks and replacing him with Forster

I don't know it looks like a pretty large uptick to me.

Last 10 we are going at 1.7 which is 65 over a season.

Last 5 we are going at 1.6 which is 61 over a season.

2.2 is 84 over a seaon.

It's a fair jump and given we have shown no real signs of sustaining good runs - a biggish ask.

You mention the 19 from first 13 which is 1.46 a game...in the 10 since we as we have said won 17 pts so only been going at 1.7 per game an uptick yes but not a big one and a lot smaller than the one we need from here on in too.

We'll know a lot more come end of Sunday!

Agree next two will say a lot.

Let's hope this side can go on a good run, problem is it is hard to see how right now - if we could look at side and say "there that looks likely" then i'd be feeling dead confident as i don't think Tottenham or Newcastle are all that frankly - but the bigger problem is neither are we.

I look at our midfield especially every game, game in game out and just feel deflated whatever 3 is picked.

Bajcetic being about the only bright spot.

But let's see what these two home games bring and see where we are then.

I'd love it to happen and I hope the team prove me wrong, but I'm really struggling to see it at the moment. It's hard to take any comfort from anything they've achieved in previous seasons because this year, both physically and mentally, it's hard to believe it's even the same set of players. Whereas in previous years they seemed capable of constantly bouncing back from adversity, it seems like any sort of setback just completely derails any signs of recovery this season. We've seen mini runs of wins and it looks like they're getting back on track, but then they're always followed by another slip up which then usually leads directly on to a few more bad results afterwards. It even seems to happen within games where they often have 10-20 minute spells of looking good, but if this doesn't produce instant dividends then they quickly seem to lose heart and it all becomes very ragged again.

A lot of parallels have been drawn with the dramatic recovery of a few seasons ago where they suddenly bounced back from a disastrous run to finish the season on a long unbeaten run; however, it just seems like the problems run much deeper this year than they did that season. The team had started that year looking imperious (Villa horror show aside) and until the freak run of injuries it was looking like they were going to walk another title. The injuries have been numerous again this year, but even before they started occurring it was clear that there were problems. Right from the first game something looked really amiss and it soon became apparent that it wasn't just early season rustiness. I kept thinking it would be sorted out within a month or 2 but it never has been. I was convinced the world cup break would really benefit us and give Klopp and his coaching staff a chance to sort everything out, but if anything the performances have been even worse since the season resumed. So many players are out of form and yet there aren't really many alternatives because the potential replacements are either injured or are in equally poor form.

I am starting to wonder if a load of players have already been informed they are not part of any future plans from the end of the season and are already elsewhere in their heads? It looks like most are going to Everton!

We'll know a lot more come end of Sunday!

We have 10 points from our last 4 games.

Since players have come back from the long injury list - we were missing our best 2 centre backs and 3/4 forwards during our worst run - we are getting points, granted without looking ourselves.

Unbelievably, we have 23 points from our last 12 games, during a time when we have been awful.

Beat the Mancs at the weekend and then get an average of 2 points per game for the remainder of the season and we finish with 68 points. That might be enough but I think we will get more than that.

The game on Sunday is huge, not just for the 3 points but to continue the momentum and change the doubters to believers.

No question Sunday is a big, big game for lots of reasons.

We only have 2 league games now between now and April - Fulham is off as they are in Cup and then international shite.

Be typical of us this season to build momentum and then see it halted.

Mancs on Sunday, Bournemouth on 11th and that is it until April 1st - a 3 week gap.

We do have what is left of the Real Madrid game on 15th, but league wise that is it.

We then have 3 really tough games after that break in little over a week

Man City a 1st April

Chelsea a 4th April

Arsenal h 9th April

Arsenal will be first home game in over a month!

We can't afford to come back into action sluggishly or we could easily lose all 3 of those games - on the flip side of course a good haul from those 3 and we might be set fair.....if we lose to the mancs on Sunday though we are going to be under pressure to get pts from those 3 hard games.

I feel we will have a pretty good idea of what is what come the final whistle on 9th April.

Something that has been case a lot for us in recent years is our toughest games being condensed/back to back... like this run to have red mancs, blue mancs, chelsea and arsenal in 4 of a 5 game run is tough...ok chelsea has ended up in there as a rescheduled game but still...

Have noticed same has not been case for Man City in recent years - hardest games more spread out.

I suppose we can say they will all be out way and we have an 'easyish' run in and of course if we do well in them we are set nicely...knowing our fucking luck this season we'll have some sort of week long bug in camp right as the 3 games in first week of april all happen!
