Klopp looks to homeland for summer strengthening

Timo Werner became the latest Bundesliga talent to be linked with the Reds this week. The 21 year old RB Leipzig striker is reportedly on Jurgen Klopp’s radar as he looks to add more firepower to his frontline this summer.

With Daniel Sturridge almost certainly on his way at the end of the season, Klopp will need to add at least one more striker to his squad and Werner is one of the most lethal counter attacking forwards in Germany and appears to be a much more natural fit for Klopp’s “counter pressing” style than Sturridge. He also spends far more time on the pitch than the treatment table, which is another thing he has over the England man.

Werner has scored 14 goals this season and his agent, Karlheiz Forster, claims that the German under 21 international is attracting plenty of attention from England. “There is general interest from Premier League clubs,” he said. The English are everywhere in the Bundesliga - they scout and track players extensively - and Timo has made himself even more interesting with his performances and goals for Leipzig”.

The Reds have also been heavily linked with a team-mate of Werner’s, midfielder Naby Keïta, who is also reportedly being chased by Bayern Munich, Borussia Dortmund, Atletico Madrid and Arsenal.

Leipzig have been the surprise package this season, their first in the Bundesliga, and currently sit in 2nd place behind leaders Bayern. It’s been a meteoric rise for a club that was only founded in 2009 and started out in the fifth division, if you like to bet on Bundesliga matches you could have been quids in betting on Leipzig this season.

The Reds continue to be linked with other Bundesliga talents too, such as Mahmoud Dahoud and Julian Brandt. Dahoud scored a terrific goal for Monchengladbach in midweek but Liverpool’s confidence in landing the midfield man has waned somewhat in the face of interest from Chelsea, Juventus and Dortmund among others.

Brandt, meanwhile, was this week strongly linked with a move to Bayern but it appears that the Munich club want to do a deal in the summer of 2018 when a £10.7m release clause kicks in on the Leverkusen man’s contract. Liverpool want to do a deal this summer, but much will depend on whether they can offer Champions League football to one of the hottest young properties in Europe.
