Jurgen Klopp admired the character that his team showed as Liverpool booked their ticket into the knockout rounds of the Champions League with a 3-0 win against Ajax on Wednesday evening.
As we have seen on quite a few occasions this season, Liverpool were slow out of the blocks and had to withstand considerable pressure from the home team in the first 35 minutes.
But the visitors steadied the ship soon after with three goals either side of the half time break and came out of the game with a confidence boosting clean sheet.
While the inconsistent start of their Premier League campaign has been well documented, Liverpool have responded extremely well from a 4-1 hammering from Napoli in their first group game to win their next four on the bounce and secure qualification to the next phase.
It is a feat that Klopp says should never be taken for granted as spoke after the fixture (per The Mirror).
“Qualifying for the knockout stages, I think nobody ever should take for granted - it's really difficult.
"“We showed character, yes. It was extremely helpful to come back after they looked the better team for 35 minutes, and qualifying for the knockout stages like that is a big achievement that nobody should take for granted."
The manager was delighted that his team was able to turn the tables on their opponents after that challenging opening to the contest and said overcoming adversity is just what his side needed.
“I’m not sure what is better in our situation, to fly through a game or to overcome difficulties as we did and develop into your best self.
“That was really important and in the end we did really well, it was really helpful [for Liverpool's season].
"It is a very good example of how you have to play [when things are going against you], and that is step by step and realising you have to do it again and again.”
