Ferdinand: I would take Mo Salah over Luis Suarez

Mo Salah continued his blistering start to the new campaign as Liverpool made it two wins from two in the Champions League with a 5-1 thumping over Porto on Tuesday Evening.

The Estadio De Grado has been a happy hunting ground for the Reds in recent seasons and with this latest victory they made it 14 goals scored and just two conceded over their last three appearances at the venue.

The Egyptian maestro scored a double to move his 2021/22 season tally to eight goals in as many games.

This is his best start to a season in Liverpool colours and on the back of Salah becoming the quickest player in club history to 100 Premier League goals, the discussion is on regarding where he sits in the pecking order of great players.

Rio Ferdinand gave an outsiders view on the topic saying that he would take Salah over another beloved goal scorer in Luis Suarez.

Metro (via BT Sport) reported the former Man United and England defender as saying:

“I’d take Mo Salah, I think what he’s done in the last four season, he’s the top scorer again for Liverpool this season, I think he’s immense.

“The icing on the cake is he’s an integral part of a team who’s won big trophies, the Premier League, the Champions League, he’s a joy to watch an assassin in and around the box.

“Yes Suarez had a fantastic season, but for what Mo Salah has done, I can’t look past him in the modern era, in terms of winning the league in a Liverpool shirt.

‘He’s not even doing this playing as a No.9, he’s doing it as a wide striker, he gets all types of goals. He does a bit of everything for me, he takes people on, he can run from deep”

While the Uruguayan only spent three and a half seasons on Merseyside before a acrimonious departure to Barcelona, his Liverpool legacy is sealed scoring 82 goals in just 132 appearances including back to back seasons with 30 plus goals.

Despite being virtually shown the door by Barca and approaching his mid 30s, the determination of Suarez to prove people wrong is clearly evident and he played a major role in Atletico Madrid winning the La Liga title  last season and scored the winning penalty in their clash against AC Milan.

One man who knows all about stepping up at the big moment for Liverpool is Michael Owen and he had a different point of view to Ferdinand.

“As a one off season, Suarez under Brendan Rodgers, I’ve never seen anything like it in my life, 31 goals and 17 assists. It’s not all about who wins the league.

‘I don’t think he’s [Salah] great when crosses come in, he’s not good at getting on the end of them with headers.’

It is a interesting discussion point and everyone will have a different view, but at the end of the day Liverpool fans are the true winners having seen both of these remarkable footballers in their prime week in and week out.

My word.

Fuck Suarez. Can't stand the fucker, but Ferdinand isn't a racist who constantly dragged his or our club's name through the mud for a good couple of years is he?

This is another "at his peak" vs "overall" question, really.

I mean, Salah has been brilliant for us but no one is ever touching Suarez in the fall of 2013. Genuinely competing with Messi for about 3-4 months to be the best player in the world.

But if it's overall impact for Liverpool, then it's Salah, and while it's sort of close right now, if Salah stays and wins a few more trophies, it won't be close by the end of his career.

It's the same as the Original Ronaldo vs. Rapist Ronaldo debate. One was better at his peak, but the other has had a better career and you'd have to say will go down as the overall greater footballer. Not that either of them can tie Messi's or even Maradona's boots.

Clearly Suarez was phenomenal, but he was poor by his standards at the end of that 2013/14 season when we most needed him not to be. It’s also sometimes conveniently forgotten that we did pretty well without him during his long suspension at the start of that season. I also find the whole ‘one man team’ narrative of that season disrespectful to Gerrard, among a few others, including Sturridge, who had the season of his life.

Sterling was our best player in the final third of that season.

I love Mo but i’ve still never seen a better player for us, than Suarez. Even my old man who has seen all of the greats, says he’s the best he’s ever seen.

I mean my dad’s a prick but for once I agree with him.

Having said all of that, I doubt anyone was giving Suarez any more stick in the Barca game at Anfield, than me. In a discussion about ability I can be magnanimous but as thing stand right now he can fuck right off and I hope we destroy Atletico in the coming games.

Suarez was out of this world in that season we nearly won the league. The quality of those goals every week was on another level that won't be seen again, ever.

But we still only won one League cup with him. Salah's goals and consistency has taken us to 2 European cup finals, won us the league, super cup, world club cup and nearly won us another league. He's still finding another level each year too. This season he's been incredible so far, improved passing, harder work rate, better awareness, better control.

Salah for me all day long, he just keeps getting better.

The only argument against this is the quality of teammate Salah has compared to what Suarez had,and manager too.

But Suarez was pure Suarez 20 times a season. Suarez does that and it’s “business as usual”. Mo is great; Louis was greatest-in-PL-history great.

Absolutely, but that just reminded me so much of him

He was... and this guy Salah's record suggests similar... with his best-ever season perhaps unfolding before our eyes now.

Couldn't agree more.

Never left a ground home or away without a smile on my face when he played.

Remember when we signed him, I thought ah he might be good north of the border but this is the 1st division. First game I watched him was against Chelsea he sent Micky Droy for the echo and chipped the keeper. Not only a great player but an absolute gent. I walked the course with him when he played the Nelson Mandela invitational so down to earth, he chatted away for the whole round.

Great story mate.

I had a signed painting of the iconic running away after the Chelsea title winning goal behind the bar when we ran a pub, winded the shite up so much!

Love it, can just imagine the bitters. I had a signed pic of him hurdling the ad boards after scoring the winner agains Bruges at Wembley. Gutted when it was "lost" during one of our many moves.

Another iconic moment amongst the many. Even seeing him on the TV before the game made me smile amongst the sadness of the Sir Roger tribute.

Not often I agree with ferdinand but there's just no competition in my book. Mo is head and shoulders above Suarez and Id pick him every time out of the 2.

Yep. There’s no question; I’d go as far as to say it’s a laughable comparison.

As much as I love Suarez I'd have Mo ahead of him.  His first season was as impressive as Suarez's best season for us and he's on now for another one that could be as good if not better. Hitting his prime now.
