Jamie Carragher believes three new quality additions should see Liverpool become true title contenders next season.
The depth of the reigning league champions has been a constant talking point throughout this season and the stark reality hit home after Sunday’s humbling 4-1 defeat to Man City.
While these are undoubtedly challenging times for anyone associated with the club, the former club legend speaking on Sky Sports (per the Mirror) believes that there can be a solution.
“Liverpool haven't got the squad and quality of back-ups of other clubs. I'm convinced they'll be back. I still think they need three players.
“They need that centre-back, maybe he's joined now in [Ozan] Kabak, they need someone to replace Wijnaldum and they need someone in the front three.
“And I'm not talking about players on the bench. I'm talking about players that come into the team like Matip, Wijnaldum and Mane did - and like Salah, Van Dijk and Alisson did.”
Liverpool have already been linked to a few players including Leeds winger Raphinha and Sporting Lisbon central midfielder Pedro Goncalves, each who have been in fine form for their respective sides during this campaign.
The title is now looking like a one horse race after Manchester City embarked on one of their trademark winning runs while those around them all stumbled. In horse racing terms, City are approaching the last fence while their rivals still have two or three to go. Carragher says that City’s response after a well below-par season is one that Liverpool can most certainly replicate.
“Manchester City are a massive example for Liverpool this season.
“Man City lost nine league games last season. They were 25, 30 points behind Liverpool - and look at them now. That can easily happen to Liverpool next season, there's no doubt about that.
“What Man City are doing right now should be an example for everyone in that Liverpool dressing room, and Jurgen Klopp, that it's not the end of the world what is happening right now.
“They've got more than enough to come back.”
It is a sentiment that former Fulham and Wales manger Chris Coleman completely agrees with and also feels the Reds have lacked the respect they deserve this season.
“I’m amazed listening to some of the criticism of Liverpool. This is a team that won the title, Champions League title, been labelled as one of the best team in the Premier League - which absolutely they are.
“This season they have had crippling injuries to important players. Also the style of football Jurgen Klopp likes - heavy metal football - that they have been doing for two or three seasons and sooner or later that will catch up.”
Just like Carragher, Coleman believes that this is not the end of the cycle.
“They are a great team, they are in a sticky moment. Will they win the league, no.
“I think they need to add some players and they need to back Jurgen in the transfer market.
'No team can maintain those standards, but can they come back again? Of course they can.
"A lot of their players look a bit tired and jaded from playing the most attacking, the most exciting football, but they will come back again."
