Jamie Carragher says if a big bid comes in for Darwin Nunez in the January transfer window he would not be against selling the Uruguayan striker.
Discussion surrounding the Liverpool future of the 25 year-old has ramped up in the past few weeks with reports that the club had received a big money bid from Saudi League club Al-Hilal, something that since has been refuted.
Nunez is one of those players which divides great opinion amongst the fanbase. And there is little doubt that he has a unique skillset which when on form makes him a nightmare for opposition defenders.
He exhilarates and frustrates in equal measure by making the difficult look easy and vice versa and that is what leads him to be inconsistent. You know there is something to work with but there is only so long you can wait for it to emerge on a regular basis.
In his Liverpool career to date, Nunez has scored 37 goals in 122 appearances but only four in 26 appearances during this campaign.
Speaking on the Overlap (per Metro), the club legend said there are a range of things you have to put into the equation, but if everything added up then he would move Nunez on.
“ Yes (I would sell him).
‘The conundrum is Liverpool have [Diogo] Jota as another option up front but he’s very injury-prone so you could leave yourself a bit short.
“If you’re sure that bid is still going to be there in the summer you probably keep him [in January] but if you’re not sure that money will still be there this summer… it’s a lot of money.
‘I would take the risk of selling him. Under Jurgen Klopp he was alright, it wasn’t great but it was okay because of that mad football, he would use his pace and have loads of shots.
‘It’s a bit more slow and measured [under Arne Slot] and he’s almost just standing there, it’s not ideal for him.’
Arsenal legend Ian Wright concurred with the opinion of Carragher.
“At this stage he should be doing a lot better than he’s doing in respects to his finishing.
“If Liverpool can get £70m back for him, that is great business, great business.
“You’ve got to roll the dice on that I think. If it was under Klopp I would keep him but it’s bypassing him at the minute.’
Continuing on the theme of current discussion points, Wright also talked about the form of Andy Robertson.
“Liverpool are top of the league, but defensively, you can feel there is a mistake in them.
“And in a couple games, you may be able to capitalise on that. Can Arsenal recognise that? Can they take advantage of that?”
"(But) I hate seeing that, because you know when you love a player, I hate seeing him (Robertson) finding it tough.”
Carragher added, “I know. But listen, we’ve all been there as players, but he’s going through that right now.”
