Benteke v Sherwood: Who's right?

As Christian Benteke prepares for his Liverpool debut in this weekend’s opener at Stoke, the Big Belgian has hit back at claims by his former manager at Aston Villa that Liverpool are not a good fit for his style of play.

When the Reds' interest in the player was first made public at the end of last season, Villa boss Tim Sherwood dismissively claimed "There's no point going to a club where they don't cross the ball”.

In fairness, it was a view shared by many Kopites too, as the results of various polls conducted across the LFC web community would confirm. Plenty of people, not just Sherwood, have reservations about whether the Belgian is a good fit for Brendan Rodgers’ needs.

Benteke himself, however, has no such doubts and let Sherwood know about it. “I don’t believe that and I told him,” explained Benteke. “I spoke with him and I explained to him the situation. I said football has changed and the football now is modern and I can adapt.

“It is not just about crossing, I can score normal goals too. I told him I am not afraid about it. That is why I came here and I can show I can play with my feet, too. The manager here will use me how he wants. He knows how to do that.

Was Sherwood so wrong though? He may have oversimplified his case somewhat (Sherwood? Oversimplify? Nooooo!) but Benteke has scored more headed goals than anybody else in the Premier League over the last three seasons. He is damned good at attacking crosses and Sherwood utilised that to help Villa survive and also reach the FA Cup final.

That aerial ability doesn’t mean he’s a one trick pony who can’t do other things, far from it. As he says himself, Benteke is an all round striker who scores all manner of goals, as we saw last weekend with his incredible volley at Swindon.

That being said, when you’ve got someone who is so good at attacking crosses it would be foolish not to utilise that and, despite his public insistence that he does not need to alter Liverpool’s stye to suit Benteke, it can only be hoped that Rodgers does plan on some subtle alterations and tweaks that will allow for more crosses than we’ve seen previously.

“If Liverpool bought me, then they know how to use me” Benteke added.

Nuri Sahin, Mario Balotelli, Lazar Markovic and Rickie Lambert amongst others were unavailable for comment...

I wouldn't say Sherwood's right - as it was a weird backhanded compliment that made him sound one dimensional - but he has a point in that you're not using all his assets if you fail to give him headers to attack.

I don't care about how well rounded he is, if we're paying £32m and a large chunk of that value is based on his tally of headed goals then we'd be a bit foolish to neglect that side of his game completely.

We'll refuse to cross the ball when Benteke is on the pitch and send in crosses when he's on the bench.

Joking aside that's what will no doubt happen. We did the same with Lambert.

I'd expect the quick feet of Coutinho, Firmino, Lallana, etc to win plenty of free kicks around tbe box. Liverpool won a reasonable number of corners last season too, so there's plenty for him to work with already without having to adjust the style of play at all.

I don't think we'll change our game a great deal, there were times last year we had plenty of opportunities to cross but couldn't as we had no one up top, so instead of passing backwards or sideways, we might now see it delivered into the centre, hardly us turning into a long ball team, and we'll now have a threat from set pieces.

There's more to him than just being a target man, Sherwood is talking nonsense.

I did though watch a re-run of the 1314 season recently and Sturridge and Suarez scored a few headers each. Skrtel scored a lot from set pieces too so it's not as though Rodgers teams can't score from simple situations.

Benteke will score headers from crosses for us if he's given service but he'll score a lot from various other situations too.

Sherwood's comments clearly suggest that he would have preferred Benteke to stay (even though the money earned from the transfer is beneficial to his club) and that he would be playing a more direct approach this year. Signing Gestede to play up front emphasises that point.

My instinct in any situation is to disagree with Timmy the Tit. However, I do think we'd be mad not to try and exploit his aerial threat as he's an absolute beast in the air. Equally though that can't be all we do with him.

All good until you realise it's gonna be Henderson standing over most of these free-kicks and corners.

I hope Benteke succeeds at Anfield but I have doubts.

I last saw him in action for Belgium against Wales. He was anonymous. Marked out of the game by some Taffy reserve. Belgium dominated possession, pinned Wales into their own box and delivered a series of decent far-post crosses, yet Benteke hardly won a header and didn’t have a single strike on goal.

Origi was far more dangerous in that match. His pace, touch and ability to turn a defender from a standing start made him a far greater threat than Benteke.

Over the course of the season I fully expect Origi to establish himself as a crowd favourite and the best Belgian at Anfield.

As for Benteke, I fear the worst. Hope I’m wrong.
