As Christian Benteke prepares for his Liverpool debut in this weekend’s opener at Stoke, the Big Belgian has hit back at claims by his former manager at Aston Villa that Liverpool are not a good fit for his style of play.
When the Reds' interest in the player was first made public at the end of last season, Villa boss Tim Sherwood dismissively claimed "There's no point going to a club where they don't cross the ball”.
In fairness, it was a view shared by many Kopites too, as the results of various polls conducted across the LFC web community would confirm. Plenty of people, not just Sherwood, have reservations about whether the Belgian is a good fit for Brendan Rodgers’ needs.
Benteke himself, however, has no such doubts and let Sherwood know about it. “I don’t believe that and I told him,” explained Benteke. “I spoke with him and I explained to him the situation. I said football has changed and the football now is modern and I can adapt.
“It is not just about crossing, I can score normal goals too. I told him I am not afraid about it. That is why I came here and I can show I can play with my feet, too. The manager here will use me how he wants. He knows how to do that.
Was Sherwood so wrong though? He may have oversimplified his case somewhat (Sherwood? Oversimplify? Nooooo!) but Benteke has scored more headed goals than anybody else in the Premier League over the last three seasons. He is damned good at attacking crosses and Sherwood utilised that to help Villa survive and also reach the FA Cup final.
That aerial ability doesn’t mean he’s a one trick pony who can’t do other things, far from it. As he says himself, Benteke is an all round striker who scores all manner of goals, as we saw last weekend with his incredible volley at Swindon.
That being said, when you’ve got someone who is so good at attacking crosses it would be foolish not to utilise that and, despite his public insistence that he does not need to alter Liverpool’s stye to suit Benteke, it can only be hoped that Rodgers does plan on some subtle alterations and tweaks that will allow for more crosses than we’ve seen previously.
“If Liverpool bought me, then they know how to use me” Benteke added.
