Barnes wants Anfield coaching return

John Barnes has his sights set on being the next Liverpool legend to return to the club, revealing he would love to help out in a coaching capacity if asked.

"I would most definitely take the job" he told Goal.com. "I played for Liverpool and working there would be a great way for me to show my appreciation to the club."

Brendan Rodgers is keen to recruit as many club legends as possible, last week Robbie Fowler, Steve McManaman and Rob Jones were given roles coaching and mentoring Academy players, whilst Kenny Dalglish also returned to the club in a director's role.

It's a philosophy Barnes shares, as he explained; “It is the modern truth that we now lack legends that can identify with the club. I feel that being part of the system would benefit the club a lot since I understand the culture. The reality is that players come and go, but the club remains and that is why it is important to always protect the brand of the club.”

He'd bring so much to the table in any number of roles.  He's just such a clever, sensible fella.

If ever I've got a view on something and John Barnes has the opposite view, I tend to just assume I must be wrong.

Would Love to see Barnes involved with the club in a official capacity ...it'd be a great appointment.

This "Article" by goal is very spurious though, this was a off the cuff quote he gave to a question purely because he was standing next to Mcmanaman and Robbie when they were ambushed in Manchester airport...they were all in Limerick for the weekend and McAteers wedding.

well if we haven't got any footballing vacancies how about another rap?!

seriously though sure he could do some sort of role, one of the only high profile figures to talk any sense in the Suarez/Evra bollocks

I'd love to see John Barnes back at the club, but some of these recent coaching roles seem very lightweight and almost like a token gesture. I think we should find a much better role than that for Barnes, as he's got so much more to offer and would be wasted otherwise.

He's one of the few club legends that not only has the passion for the club, but can also speak well on its behalf to any audience.

we're bringing Michael Owen back as career guidance advisor, any player facing a big career decision goes to see him and is advised to do the opposite of what he says

I agree, with that said Digger said we should cut our losses with Suarez and I definitely think we did the right thing holding on to him. Other than that Digger more often than not is spot on.

The great thing about Barnes is that he always gives the impression of speaking after he's considered something properly, he's definitely not fallen into the trap of becoming a knee jerk pundit.

I have no idea if he'd be good at coaching, as his type of talent arguably can't be taught, but as a figure who can offer sage advice he'd be invaluable.

Digger is a legend who should have a position at the club. He always represents us well and has an interesting opinion which he expresses well. He would make another excellent non-exec director as his footballing credibility, especially representing ethnic minorities, is second to none.

Whether he should be on the coaching staff is another matter. We are looking to compete with the top four in England and the top 16 in Europe. Is he that calibre a coach? How has he done elsewhere? What licenses does he hold? What work has he done at home and abroad? Nothing wrong with the occasional guest appearance at Melwood  though. He was always the consummate professional.

Now is not the time for sinecures. I would welcome him back- but in a role which offers him the best opportunity to shine.

I see no reason why he can't be a good coach. He's an intelligent guy. Just because his limited time as a manager didn't go well doesn't mean he has nothing to offer.

Obviously anyone with any sense would want Barnes back. I don't even know if he would be a good coach, however he's John Barnes so that would be irrelevant.

My favourite Liverpool player by miles and his Corinthian figure still sits on my desk to this day. My grandma got his autograph for me when he was playing for Newcastle and she saw him in a jewellers. He gave her a cuddle as well.

As one of the few rational black ex-players who doesn't take the bandwagon or sensationalist view it's a shame that the press ignore him. Sadly because his well thought out balanced view point doesn't allow them to create controversy out of everything he says.

He told me long hair was shit.

It would all hinge on the role.

We need top quality coaching to say at the top, being a top quality player (he was) and being a top quality coach ( no current evidence) are quite different.

Clearly he has much experience he can pass on which can only benefit younger players. To be fair, it appears that Fowler, Macca and Jones are being asked only to make what amounts to guest appearances to help with some specifics rather than being offered broad coaching roles.

More generally it is good to see the Spirit of liverpool returning with those three, KK back ad discussion about Digger, We are on the right track.
