Allen hoping for more advanced role

Joe Allen says he hopes to add goals and creativity to his game as he nears a return to full fitness.

Speaking to the club's official website, the 23 year old said: "I can get involved more in the creative side, in assisting goals. That's a big thing”

Allen spent the majority of his first season at the club playing in a deeper role, but caught the eye in pre-season playing further forward and is hoping for an opportunity to build on that as he prepares for a return to action following a hamstring injury picked up against Notts County in August. "If I have the chance to play further forward, like I did in pre-season, goals are obviously another big one that I'd like to add a bit more to my game” he said.

"It's something I felt was coming at Swansea, and last season sort of stopped a little bit. That's something I think I can offer looking forward.

"I pride myself on that fact that I can play a couple of different roles, but that's a role I have played more naturally and played the most throughout my career."

thought he did well there in pre-season, not convinced he is the right player to be a regular in our current set up but if he finds his form of early last season he'll be a great option to have

Agree with TK that his attitude is spot on, and I think there is a good player in there somewhere - we did see it when he first joined, but he really needs to show it when he gets the opportunity or he may be another finding himself on loan at Sunderland.

He's a conundrum this lad, I genuinely thought he was going to be great when he first arrived after his first few games, looked like he could become world class, but at that time the rest of the team were pretty shite so I don't know whether it was deceptive him standing out.

Since then he has been pretty middle of the road and you can try and put that down to his injury but if that's the case he needs to come back in at that level he was when he arrived, maybe not straight away but sooner rather then later because we can't be carrying another player in the squad who never seems to be able to get back to full fitness/form.

I like him a lot, he's a quality player.  Unfortunately I think he's going to find it difficult to get into the side unless there's an injury or two.  If he does get that chance I wouldn't be surprised if he played well enough to stay in, but it's going to be tough for him if we keep playing with just a midfield two.

If we play with a midfield three, it would be interesting to see Allen play ahead of Gerrard and Lucas/Henderson. He can play with his head up, pick a pass, and keep possession.

If we play with a midfield two, I'd personally like to see Gerrard and Henderson, as the former's legs are going (I'm not writing Stevie off by any means, but I think he needs someone with more energy than Lucas next to him).

I'm wondering if Allen and Coutinho can play in the same side, especially if Allen is playing in an advanced role. If it is to work, Coutinho will need to play a bit wider, like last season.

We have a few options with people returning from injury and it will be interesting to see how it pans out.

Whatever we end up doing, let's hope it's not to protect anybody's reputation or status within the team. I haven't seen enough from either Gerrard or Lucas to warrant untouchable status so if Allen is fit and has been training well he deserves a chance in the team, end of.

Moving him? He has played most of his games from there anyway. I just want the strongest team.

The best young 10 we have ever had does not need to play wide left so Joe Allen can get a look in - imo. He is a CM, he competes for time with Lucas and Gerrard.

It will take a lot to make a triangle of Suarez/Sturridge with Coutninho in the hole stronger in an attacking sense.

I think we need more people in the middle, so we should get Coutinho in where he has been so effective for most of his time here. With Allen filling in down the left when Coutinho comes in. Works very well, in my opinion. Strong team, strong players, playing positions that suit them. Playing him where he has played mots of the time isn't moving him.

For me I look at players who make the team better regardless - not set up different. Or better said, not really affected by the "formation".

In order:

Suarez

Sturridge

Coutinho

Toure

Sakho

Mignolet

Johnson

In my heart I want Gerrard on the list.

So that makes 7, or 8 if I go with my heart.

Three positions to play for. You notice a huge lack of "people in the middle" who, again opnion, make the team markedly better. If I had to choose between Allen and Henderson I would go with the latter as he seems a little more useful in a fluid team.

Not going to happen (Allen in an advanced role). If anyone should be played in an advanced position it should be Gerrard as he is one of the best chance creators/scorers at the club. For right now Allen should be looking to be subbed with Lucas or Gerrard when they tire late in games.

My advice to Allen:

Less talking off the pitch, more talking on it.

I feel the same way at times. I think it has little to do with him, though. He'd have given an interview, asked some questions, then the official site will be pulling it all apart and displaying it. It makes it look like he's always in the papers bigging himself up. He's not like that at all, from what I've seen of him.

Oh yes, don't think it is only down to him.
