Alisson: We just stick together through the difficult moments

Alisson says the belief within the playing group remains as strong as ever after Liverpool chalked up their second 1-0 win in a matter of days this time coming against West Ham on Wednesday evening.

A Darwin Nunez header was the difference in a individual performance that showed the summer signing from Benfica is quickly coming to grips with Premier League football.

And while the Reds chalked up the victory, they were made to sweat with the Reds keeper coming to the aid of his side when they needed him most.

Liverpool arguably produced their best first half of the season, but a rash challenge inside the penalty area by Joe Gomez threatened to undo all the good work.

However the Brazilian produced a fine save denying Jarrod Bowen from the penalty spot which continued his influential last few days after the pin-point assist for Mo Salah’s winning goal against Man City.

Ever the humble hero, Alisson was not focussed on his own feats as the Official site reported:

“I won't tell too much about that! But I think it was a good save. In football everybody studies everybody – the strikers study the goalkeeper, the goalkeepers study the strikers or the penalty takers. I will not talk too much about my thing what I do – sorry!

However, he was much more happy to focus on the up and down nature of the team performances.

“Since the beginning of the season we have big goals to win trophies, to fight for every competition that we are in. Things didn't work out so good for us. We started well with the Community Shield against Man City, an important game against an important, big opponent. It gave us a little bit of confidence but we didn't use that for the Premier League and then suddenly we lost confidence during the games, we lost players as well for injuries.

“This is something that affected the team, the rhythm, some players coming back from a long time not playing. All the circumstances around affected us a little bit. On the pitch as well, performances weren't so bad but they weren't enough to get the three points, to get the win.”

If there is one thing that has been symbolic of this Liverpool squad in the Jurgen Klopp era it has been the mentality and belief. Winning games when all has looked lost and willing themselves to go again when there is seemingly nothing left in the tank.

And the keeper says that it remains as strong as it ever has been.

“We have to believe, otherwise we don't have a reason to be here. We have our targets, we have our goals, big goals. But we have to be humble, we have to recognise that we didn't start the season well and we know how important the points are that you drop on the way.

“We just stick together – it was something that we were speaking about a lot, to stick together at this difficult time, difficult moment. Working hard, working every day – not only on matchdays. Now things are coming out, the results are coming but we don't have to be too excited about that. We have to keep our feet on the ground and just stick together, keep on working because it's a long and tough season for everybody.

The 30 year-old knows how difficult it can be to adjust to a new league, and therefore he said for someone like Nunez, patience and support has been vital in helping  him adapt and a rocky start, it is starting to reap the benefits.

“We are helping him a lot, we keep him really close. He's a really good lad. I know that it's not easy, it's really difficult to settle in a different country.

“When I came here, I knew a little bit more English than him – he's learning. He's working hard on that – not only on the pitch but outside to learn English. He's a really disciplined man and we are trying to help him, help Lucho.

"We are a really strong team who works together and sticks together all the time when we are at the training ground. Sometimes outside the pitch we come together to spend time together – and this is important not only for him but for his family and for all our families.”

Alisson's kicking was pretty poor and the penalty save was quite comfortable for a keeper of his quality, but yet again he made a couple of absolutely crucial and fantastic saves to help give us the points. The best keeper we have had in the PL era by some distance.
