Alexander-Arnold: Leicester win is our best of the season

Liverpool consolidated their lead atop the Premier League table after a producing a footballing masterclass against Leicester on Boxing Day.

The Reds controlled the contest from kick-off, barely giving the hosts a sniff and while the final score line of 4-0 was more than comprehensive, no one could have complained if another couple of goals were scored.

All over the pitch, it was clear the men in Red were on a mission.

While they had passed many tests this season, they knew this was the fixture that their rivals would be hoping for a slip-up.

A below-par performance would have been understandable when you take into account the air miles that the Reds have clocked up over the past 10 days along with the crowded fixture list.

However this Liverpool team does not believe in any form of excuses and ruthlessly exposed the gulf in class between themselves and the Foxes in second place.

One man who was simply superb on the evening was Trent Alexander-Arnold.

The 21 year-old was the creator in-chief for the visitors on the evening, setting up two goals for Roberto Firmino while putting the icing on the cake on a five star performance with a sublime goal 12 minutes from time.

After the game, the youngster told the Official site that it was their best performance of the season.

“Yes, we played really good football, especially after all the travelling we’ve done and the intense period we’ve had

“You put all that into account, then yes, it probably is our best performance of the season.

“We controlled the game for most parts, they never really had too many clear-cut chances. We’re happy with the clean sheet and to get four goals at a place like this is something to be proud of.

Speaking on his goal which was his second for the season, the England international said he was grateful to be on the end of such a flowing move.

" I don’t get on the scoresheet too often.

[It was] a good counter-attack, I saw the space and Sadio has played a lovely ball and I thought, ‘Hit it first time.

Despite currently being 13 points clear of their nearest rival, Alexander-Arnold said none of the players or coaching staff would be resting on their laurels.

“You don’t think you’re going to be 13 points ahead but we’re happy to be in this position, we’re not going to take it for granted and we know the season is not over.

“We’re still not even halfway through the season so we need to keep going and try to push that advantage to the most we can because you’ve seen the Premier League and the results every week, anything can happen."
