Red of the Day - Pegguy Arphexad

written by Phil Matthews

Perpetual reserve goalkeeper Pegguy Arphexad has a dubious distinction in his Liverpool career. He has more medals (six) than league appearances (two).

Arphexad was signed by Gerard Houllier on a free transfer as back up for Sander Westerveld after a short but relatively successful period at Leicester City, helping them to a League Cup victory with several key penalty saves. During his time at Leicester, he put in a sensational and highly frustrating performance at Anfield in the league, keeping a clean sheet and adding another poor result to The Reds’ abysmal league run of that year.

Despite Westerveld’s somewhat erratic form, Arphexad managed only two appearances for Liverpool and was released. Following spells at Coventry and Notts County, he returned to France briefly before retiring in 2005 with less than 40 first team appearances across a 16 year career. To this day, he’s remembered more by Liverpool fans for his outstanding performance against us for Leicester rather than for anything he achieved at Liverpool.
