Red of the Day - Jack Whitham

by Chris Wood

Born in Burnley, Jack made his reputation at Sheffield Wednesday, for whom he scored 26 times in 63 League games, as well as appearing once for England's Under-23 side.

After signing for Liverpool in May 1970, he was given his debut at Newcastle on 12th September 1970 but only made a further 5 League appearances during the rest of that season, scoring just once - in the 2-1 win at West Ham in the middle of December.

But John Toshack's arrival meant that Jack's first-team opportunities became very limited. However, he did enjoy some success towards the end of 1971, scoring two late goals in a win at Coventry and then managing a hat-trick against Derby County at Anfield three weeks later. His last game (and goal) came at Huddersfield on 12th February 1972.

He was ironically enough transferred to the club Toshack had arrived from (Cardiff City) in January 1974 but moved on to Reading a year later.

My first game too.  Cant remember to much of it but I remember the hat trick!

I spotted the highlights on youtube recently. I was made up as I didn't think there was any film of it and hadn't seen it since.

I remember the goals, one more than the others, and the smell of the pipes and cigars from the main stand, and of course the Kop and it's ebb and flow!
