Podcast: Southampton 4 Liverpool 4 - Match Reaction

A fitting way to end a season of disappointment, as despite leading 2-0 the Reds were held to a 4-4 by an already relegated Southampton side.

Jota scored twice, Gakpo also found the net and Bobby signed off with a goal on his farewell appearance, but defensively it was a horror show and Kelleher didn't make the most of a rare starting opportunity in goal.

Chris Smith is joined by Julian Richards and TLW Editor Dave Usher to recap a crazy game at St Mary's and to also take a look at events elsewhere. Specifically at Goodison where the Blues performed their annual escape act, much to Dave's disgust and frustration.

I've only seen the highlights, but god we're shite! I physically fucking hate Fabinho!

Oh and I'm sorry to say that I now realise why Queef hasn't moved on to become first choice elsewhere, he's not fucking good enough!

Nice one lads, glad the numbers are up as you deserve a wider audience. Looking forward to more content in the summer. Dave, get Skelly on the pod as a celebrity guest.

Also on the pod. Glad the other two stuck up for Diog, his numbers are probably similar to Sadio, I’m guessing?

What were you expecting, we made 6 changes to the starting line up from the Villa game ? Defensively we were never going to be fully functional given that Gomez and Matip haven’t played together for ages and neither of them would be considered a first choice. It really was a nothing game for us . Hopefully we bring in the right players and we will be much better. We didn’t deserve top 4 but if we had (as we should have done) beaten Leeds, Palace and Brighton at Anfield we would have finished 3rd.

I just thought (hoped?) that even our second stringers would be able to deal with the worst team in the league!

It’s the hope that kills !  Maybe if there was something to play for and the fact that (I don’t think) that back 4 has played together previously ,or certainly in a very long time didn’t help.

Shame on you all when Dave compared the treatment Nunez has received to Crouchie, not one of you quoted;

Lanky streak of piss :wallbutt: :wallbutt: :wallbutt:

Crouchie was a £6m signing and wasn't expected to move mountains!

Thanks for the podcasts chaps. Been brilliant and also very therapeutic after the dross we’ve endured most of the season.

My anger is not just with Brighton, but that prick Maddison. Taking the ball off Tielemans for that penalty was the sliding doors moment of the Shite staying up or going down. Twat.

I’m with you Dave. Get on the golf course for 3 months. I started back 2 weeks ago, bliss. Soothing the shite of the past 9 months.

Thanks to everybody involved in these, thoroughly enjoyed them all season. Look forward to them the way I used to look forward to the pink after the game all those years ago.

That must have been lovely for you, but I'm not sure we're a worthy replacement for THAT?

I love this pod. It’s genuinely my favourite football podcast, but I’m hating this one so far (I’m 40 mins in). From the very annoying shite of not wanting a Brighton player, who were almost certainly signing, because him and his teammates had a bad day against Everton, despite him being the starting midfielder with the Argentina team that just won the World Cup. And then the ongoing crap about Nunez not being able to understand anything? “At least you can teach a dog”?  There was other stuff too that now slips my mind that made me switch it off and put on some music when I was out on my walk. I’ll listen to the rest in the bus tomorrow morning when going to work, but I really hope it gets a bit less hatey and a bit more lovey. And I know we’ve had a shite season, and Everton stayed up, and all that. I get that. It’s the tone I’m not enjoying.

But again, you know I love this pod, and the lads on it. But this is unpleasant so far for my own tastes (I say my own tastes as others are clearly enjoying it).

Those Blues pitch invading - the majority seem quite young (including my mate's lad) - they've never seen the club win a trophy. This is as close as it gets to winning a trophy for them.

Fucking losers.

I dunno, Johnny. If it's not coming across, the Darwin stuff from Jules and I is 90% in jest. We all want him to do well. I understand if you think we're overdoing it in the name of getting at Dave, perhaps that's fair, but there's nothing "hatey" about it.

You know Dave well enough to know he'll get over the Mac Allister stuff if we sign him.

Overall, it wasn't the easiest day to be "lovey" and upbeat, but that's why I love to do them as soon as possible after the final whistle, because it captures the mood of how we (and hopefully others) are feeling.

Appreciate your support and feedback regardless.

People on that journey in the morning are in for an uncomfortable ride when you go all Father Jack at the back of the bus!

Yeah, I appreciate that.  I know it’s not done in malice, and my temperament at the moment is probably making me hear things a bit more negatively too. It’s a lighthearted pod as well as one that’s great for dissecting game, so please don’t think I’m saying anything other than this one is just not my cup of tea.

Of course, man. I appreciate the honesty. Just putting the other side across. It's something we'll take on board.

It'll taste more like a cup of piss when you hear that Jules wants Alonso to replace Klopp.

I gave you a little shout out as whenever Alonso's name is mentioned you're always the first person I think of due to our 14 year back and forth on the subject. 14 years, fucking hell!

I still don’t think we’ve explored those feelings enough.

Happy to come on sometime and share my views on Xabi.  I think there’s still one or two Liverpool fans out there that still don’t hate me.  I’d like to fix that. Actually, on second thoughts…
