A Few Thoughts from the Match: Liverpool 1 Burnley 1

1. Sigh.

*Be positive, be positive, be positive*

2. Salah is a cracking signing: pace, touch, movement, goals. Is right.

3. We played some decent stuff in the first half.

4. Erm...

5. I accept that we need to rotate this season, but seven changes? And why not make The Ox one of them? £40m surely gets you a start versus Burnley.

6. Not that the bench was relevant until there was almost no point. The game had died for us in an attacking sense at least twenty minutes before the subs even warmed up. Why not make a bolder change, sooner?

7. Our defending is unacceptable. How does a former centre half coach amazing attacking football while failing to effect any change whatsoever in our defending?

8. Joel Matip was soft as, throughout. Everyone gives it loads about Lovren and Klavan, but how is this bloke any better?

9. I've had just about enough of Klopp berating the fans. Jurgen - we get it: you think we're knob 'eds. Carry on like this though and you'll see the feeling become rapidly mutual. The goodwill drains audibly with every touch line tantrum you throw at your own fans. This is your team playing your football. If you don't like the way we react to Groundhog Day matches, change something.

10. By my reckoning we had four corner takers today. That tells you everything you need to know about both their quality and the importance placed upon them by the manager.

11. Despite the drudgery of recent results, it's right to remember that our general trajectory and current situation is good. It feels hard though after a 5-0 beating and two weak draws that exhibited all the same old problems.

12. We need to break out of this cycle of getting loads of chances but only taking one or two, while simultaneously conceding from only one or two shots on target. This is fundamental stuff and anyone not concerned by it is just not paying attention.

13. I really respect Klopp's commitment to the long term and also to player development, but he needs to get this season bouncing - and quickly. A bit of short-termisn wouldn't go amiss in that regard: get a full strength side out against Leicester for both games because things will get hairy if we see another 180 minutes of the same old same old.

People saying Klopps team is showing undeniable improvement are going to be a bit red faced come through end of October.

As far as I'm concerned Klopp can do whatever he wants. The role of the fans cannot be underestimated. Those who want to spread negative vibes can fuck off and give their season tickets to fans who are willing to get behind the team.

Criticize all you want after the game but during the 90 minutes get behind the team. Even if you believe that fans contribute to no more than 5% of the final outcome of the game. These 5% matter, and can be the difference between a win and a draw. Do your bit. That's all what Klopp is asking for. It doesn't mean he doesn't see the players' shortcomings if he asks you to do your bit!

That's easy for you to say from your ivory tower.

I don't think there is one person who goes to the match with the intention of having a moan. This isn't North Korea - when we're conceding goals to teams who don't even really attempt to score, you're going to get people moaning. I spent £47 (season ticket admittedly) on that match yesterday and left with nothing but frustration again because we can't keep a clean sheet.

If that makes me a bad fan with "negative vibes" then so be it - personally I am sick to death of it. In fact the highlight of the match was the Eurofighter flyby just as I was leaving.

Too right.

So if someone offers to pay you back the cost of attending the game you will consider being more "supportive" during the 90 minutes?

That would depend on whether they were also prepared to offer me my money back for an invertebrate or insipid or inept performance from my team.

I'm sure that's right, but with empty stands the product all of a sudden becomes much less appealing.  I know, I've seen Dagenham and Redbridge.  And Manchester City.

True, if you're not happy with your new role as an extra in the Asian's markets leading drama.  Walk on!

No - the money is a personal frustration. Other people don't care about how much they pay. I do, it bothers me immensely because I am always on the edge of not being able to afford my season ticket.

I could have a free ticket or a corporate ticket - I am going to shout my frustrations at Klavan and Can going for the same ball because I am a football fan, it's my team and such stupidity is completely needless. Like I said, if Klopp wants the crowd to calm down, concede less goals.

Precisely. A few seasons ago under previous managers it was support the team in the ground, slag 'em off if you wish in the pub after the game. Now, it's fair game to slag the team off in the ground. Fuck knows what they do after the game in the pub now.

That told them!

See, I hate this kind of thing, people telling others what to do and acting as match police. My dad has been going to the game since the 1950s, with a hiatus in the 80s when he was raising a family, and to my knowledge, has never ever sung a single song. He has done his fair share of moaning, though. Should he fuck off and give his season ticket up? I think not.

Berating the players during the 90 minutes is counterproductive. It doesn't improve things. It doesn't change the situation. Creating a positive atmosphere is the only thing that can help during the 90 minutes.

Good job it doesn't happen then.

To be fair, there are quite a few murmurs of disquiet when the defence plays with itself, gradually increasing the panic level with every pass.  And then when you get Henderson flapping and playing another backwards pass that tends to elicit a groan.

Whilst that's true mate, it's a lot different from outright "berating players for 90 minutes."

That is something I do have a big issue with and I do agree with Klopp. That's because there are too many people who just won't accept that playing out from the back is Klopp's way and for better or worse, that's what we do.

it's not that, it's the frustration when we insist on doing it when the opposition has cottoned on and push onto our defenders.  At least that seems to be gradually improving in the sense that the goalkeeper will occasionally kick the fucking thing long.

It is human nature I guess. Some people simply cannot control their emotions and frustrations. They have to vent on the spot. That doesn't change the fact that it is counterproductive to do so.

That maybe the case - the manager certainly likes doing it. That also is counterproductive.
