Liverpool's Future Rebuild: Should They Sell One of the Front Three?

With few signings on the cards for the coming season, a major rebuild for Liverpool might be coming soon. Though this can be exciting in terms of the new talent that comes to the team, it also means that some players are going to have to leave at the end of this coming campaign.

One Issue – An Ageing Squad

Though Liverpool has a fantastic squad on their hands, there is no denying that they are getting a little older. Many of the top players are now over the age of 28, and some are even heading over 30. While there is nothing wrong with this in principle, especially if they can still deliver great results – there is inevitably going to be a comparison between other Premier League squads that are much younger.

The frontline of Liverpool has worked wonders in the past years under Jurgen Klopp. Mohammad Salah, Sadio Mané, and Roberto Firmino have delivered some great goals, but their reign might be coming to an end. Klopp took the team and built them up to be champions of both English and European football, so it is not unfeasible that we could see him do so once more. It is thought that selling Mané or Firmino might be the perfect opportunity to shake things up and inject some vigour and creativity into the forward line once more.

Mané

Sadio Mané is a Senegalese footballer who has been with Liverpool since 2016. He was key in helping them reach the UEFA Champions League Finals in 2018 and 2019, and was the Premier League’s joint-top goalscorer in the 2018-19 season. Anyone who keeps up with the latest Liverpool F.C. news would have been pleased to watch the role he played in ending Liverpool’s Premier League title drought.

There is no denying that he has been a quality player for Liverpool, but selling him might allow for the team to take on some new talent who would be able to continue his amazing performance. Selling a player of Mané’s calibre would give Liverpool the funds to have the pick of talent from around the world.

Firmino

If not Mané then perhaps Firmino. The forward has been at Liverpool since 2015 and has proved to be a real credit to the team. Manager Klopp has referred to him as the “engine” behind many of their strategic plays, and this has resulted in him being a very valuable player in terms of creativity and play on the field.

Together with Mané and Salah, he helped to propel Liverpool forwards to the achievements that the team hunted down between 2018 and 2020. Though it would very much be the end of an era if he was to go, it would open up the position on the squad for someone to come in and cause as much of an impact as he has made.

Could Salah Go?

Of course, you also have to consider that Mo Salah might also decide to leave. His contract with the club will last through until the summer of 2023, but there will likely be a lot of interest in him when he is up for transfer and his agent has frequently made noises hinting at his displeasure that no new deal has been agreed between his client and the club. Should Salah decide to leave, he could be headed out of the Premier League to either Barcelona or Real Madrid in La Liga or big spending PSG in France.

These three top players helped to change Liverpool’s fortunes around, but something new needs to be brought to Anfield soon. There are so many changes that could be made to shape up the team. It will be interesting to see the cuts that Klopp and club owner John W. Henry are prepared to make.
