Ginter Still Unsure of Future Amid Liverpool Bid

The summer transfer window is slowly coming to an end. Over the last couple of months, we’ve seen clubs cautiously court many young and talented players - many of them defenders, to strengthen the backs of their new teams.

Liverpool's squad has so far only been bolstered by two new players: Harvey Elliott, back from a loan at Blackburn Rovers, and Ibrahima Konaté, the former Leipzig centre-back whose presence in Anfield will certainly bend the live odds today in favour of the club. Not that the club’s name didn’t show up in the news a lot, they were linked to players from all over Europe, although some links had far less substance than others, such as one report that had Argentine football legend Leo Messi on Klopp's radar. Sure, ok.

Ginter incoming?

One of the players heavily linked with Liverpool in a variety of transfer rumours is Borussia Mönchengladbach centre-back, Matthias Ginter. The player’s contract with Mönchengladbach is set to expire next year, so he showed up on the radar of several suitors this summer. According to various media outlets, a variety of major European teams are out to sign the 27-year-old player. A German sports portal reported that both Real Madrid and Barcelona have their eyes on him, while another news outlet spoke of the Premier League being a more likely destination for the German player, with contenders like Tottenham and Liverpool lining up to sign him.

Not sure of his future

For now, Ginter is most likely undecided about his future. He did tell the press that he intends to stay with his current team for the time being - but Mönchengladbach has yet to offer him a contract extension. While he did point out that the situation is difficult for the club - every club - as a result of the pandemic-related lockdowns and restrictions, the situation must be unpleasant for the young player. When his contract expires next year, Ginter becomes a free agent. Signing him will be much easier then - and definitely cheaper.

Who is Matthias Ginter

Ginter started playing football at the age of 4 with SV March, then moved to SC Freiburg in 2005, when he was 11. He was first capped for Germany’s U18 national team in 2011. In 2012, he joined Freiburg’s first team where he stayed for two seasons, then moved on to Borussia Dortmund for three. He left for Dortmund rivals Borussia Mönchengladbach in 2017 in a transfer worth 17 million euros (about £14.4 million today). Since then, he has played more than 120 league games with the club.

As an international, Ginter has extensive experience with high-level football. He was chosen for Germany’s 2014 World Cup squad, even if he didn’t have a chance to play, then played in the country’s Olympic team in 2016. In 2018, he was once again part of the country’s World Cup squad but didn’t get his chance to play, making him the only player in Germany’s history to participate in two World Cups without kicking the ball once.
