Decisions, decisions for Liverpool (ESPN article)

by Dave Usher for ESPN

Liverpool are set to go into this weekend's clash against arch-rivals Manchester United with the rare luxury of having close to a full-strength squad to choose from. That's something Brendan Rodgers has not had since the early part of the season, but with Brazilian midfielder Lucas Leiva and French defender Mamadou Sakho both coming through an Under-21 game unscathed last week, that leaves Jose Enrique as the only senior squad member not available for selection at Old Trafford.

The return of Lucas and Sakho has certainly given the Reds a welcome boost going into the final ten games of the season, but it's also given Rodgers something to ponder over when it comes to finalising his team selection. With Liverpool's well-documented defensive issues of late, does he bring back Lucas to help shield his leaky defence? And would re-introducing the powerful Sakho help to shore things up in the heart of his back four?

A case can be made for both -- albeit a much stronger one in the case of Sakho, given how well the midfield has functioned without Lucas -- but the more prudent approach would seem to me to leave things well enough alone. Yes, Liverpool have leaked goals of late but they still won those games and let's not forget that they are coming off the back of a clean sheet at Southampton.
