Brighton will host champions Liverpool in this 2024-25 Premier League match day 37 clash. It is a Monday night football action at the AMEX, so it promises to be an exciting one.
At the time of writing, Brighton have 52 points and they are 10th on the log after 35 matches. Liverpool have already been crowned Premier League champions on match day 34 after a 5-1 thrashing of Tottenham at Anfield. In terms of points tally, the Reds have 82 points from 35 matches as well.
Brighton appointed 31-year-old Fabian Marc Hürzeler as the club’s new head coach, making him the youngest head coach in Premier League history. The Seagulls decently started the season with some fine results. They defeated Everton 3-0 on the opening weekend, before beating Manchester United 2-1 on match day two at the AMEX. In the EFL Cup, they thumped Crawley Town 4-0 to advance to the next round. Back in the PL, they were held to a 1-1 draw by Arsenal before a shocking goalless draw with Ipswich Town at home. The Seagulls’ unbeaten start to the Premier League campaign came to an end at the hands of Chelsea, who beat them 4-2 at Stamford Bridge in late September.
Brighton returned to back-to-back wins after that loss in London, including a win over Tottenham at home. Liverpool beat them twice in four days, first in the League Cup and then in their reverse Premier League game at Anfield. Brighton then claimed one of their biggest wins of the season by beating Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City 2-1 at the AMEX. After that win, Brighton went on an eight-game (D6 L2) winless run in the Premier League until the new year. The Seagulls enjoyed their best run in the season between February and early March when they won six consecutive games in all competitions. At the time of writing, Brighton have won just one game in their past six Premier League games. A place in Europe also looks far from them this season.
Meanwhile, the Reds made a promising start to the season despite a mini-rebuild in the previous summer and Jurgen Klopp leaving the club. The arrival of Arne Slot meant Liverpool entered the campaign with a lot of uncertainty and a lack of summer arrivals. The Dutchman had to make do with the players he met on ground, and they were able to come out as champions at the end of the day. On the balance of things in the Premier League this season, Liverpool are well-deserving champions.
Liverpool started the season with some fine wins, including a 3-0 win over Manchester United at Old Trafford, before a shock 1-0 defeat to high-flyers Nottingham Forest at Anfield. The Reds then went on an eight-game winning streak across all competitions, beating the likes of AC Milan, Chelsea, West Ham, and Bologna along the way. The 2-2 draw at the Emirates against Arsenal in the Premier League on match day 9 ended the run of consecutive wins, but Liverpool soon returned to winning consistently again across all competitions. Slot’s men won the next seven games, including wins over Real Madrid, Manchester City, Aston Villa, and Bayer Leverkusen. Liverpool ended 2024 with just a loss in all competitions. The new year started a bit differently, but Liverpool still maintained wins across the board.
Surprisingly, Plymouth knocked them out of the FA Cup in early February before they staged a second-leg comeback to beat Tottenham to reach the EFL Cup final. In that final, they lost 2-1 to Newcastle at Wembley just days after PSG also knocked them out of the UEFA Champions League. At that point, from a potential treble to just one competition, the Reds were left with just the Premier League to fight for. They won four of their next five league games to secure the crown. In their first game since being crowned champions, the Reds lost 3-1 to Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
Brighton’s games are usually fun to watch, and they have held their own against the Reds in their past four meetings at the AMEX (W1 D2 L1). Liverpool are just waiting to celebrate the league triumph on match day 38, so one cannot expect them to be invested as much in an inconsequential game like this.
