"Palace hit for six (1994-95)" by Dave Usher

When the Reds made the trip to Crystal Palace on the opening day of the 1994/95 season hopes were not exactly high amongst the club's followers.  The side's performances at the end of the previous season had been woeful and pre-season results had been for the most part disappointing too.

 

A trip to Palace on paper looked potentially tricky, but a Jan Molby inspired Liverpool ran riot at Selhurst Park, demolishing the Londoners by six goals to one.

 

With Steve McManaman given a floating role for the first time, Liverpool swarmed all over Palace right from the first whistle.  Molby opened the scoring with a 12th minute penalty before McManaman doubled the lead two minutes later.  Robbie Fowler made it three when he took advantage of a mistake by Darren Pitcher, only for Chris Armstrong to pull one back for the home side.

 

Any hope Palace had of an unlikely comeback were dashed by an Ian Rush header and the win was wrapped up in emphatic style as Rush and McManaman claimed their second goals of the afternoon to get Liverpool off to a flying start in Evans' first full season in charge.

Back when LFCTV first started in 2007, they had a series called Premier League Years where they showed the entire 90 minutes of various games of ours from the Premier League era. This was one of the first games I saw them show on that channel. The level of play compared to today was pretty mediocre, with a lot more up-and-at-'em from Liverpool as opposed to the more cultured approach I recalled from the Evans era. Palace were dreadful though. They had a guy called Bruce Dyer up front, and the commentators kept talking about his pace. Yes he was probably quick, but he had the touch of a rapist and a haircut like Grace Jones. Still a great confidence-boosting start to that season after the 3 years of shite which preceded it.

I remember him, he certainly lived up to his name as he was truly 'Dire'.  Used to have this weird run where his hand would be up in the air all the time too. Weirdo.

 

From what I remember about that day, we played a kind of midfield diamond with McManaman at the point, and he just ran all over Palace.  Shortly after we bought Babb and Scales and switched to 352 or 3412 if you like.

 

There are a lot of similarities to now actually, as if we scrap the 3 at the back the most logical solution would be a midfield diamond, as we could still keep the front two intact and Coutinho could still play in the hole, as McManaman did against Palace.
