Five players LFC should target in January

Liverpool’s poor start to the season has prompted calls for Brendan Rodgers to dip into the transfer market. Here is a run down of five potential targets that could be on their way to Anfield next month.

Edinson Cavani – Paris SG

The 27 year-old Uruguayan is an absolute goal machine and is reportedly on the radar of the the Liverpool coach. Cavani made his name in Serie A but it wasn’t until the 2008/09 season with Palermo when he really flourished – 14 goals in 35 league games prompted Napoli to sign El Matador where he notched an incredible 78 goals in 104 Serie A games.

The powerful forward has a somewhat similar style of play to Liverpool icon Luis Suarez with his infectious work rate and eye for the spectacular finish. However, a fee of around £40m will be needed to prize him away from the French capital.

That’s a staggering sum but it’s rumoured that Cavani will be open to a move as he is more suited to playing the lead role, which is difficult in Paris behind the shadow of Zlatan Ibrahimovic.

Liverpool face stiff competition from Arsenal who are also looking to bolster their striking positions.

Martin Odegaard - Stromsgodset

Liverpool appear to have jumped to the head of the queue for the signature of Norwegian wonder-kid Martin Odegaard. The 15 year-old has already drawn comparisons with Lionel Messi for his trickery and ability to beat players.

Odegaard has made 23 appearances for Stromsgodset scoring five goals in the process while the teenager also made his International debut for Norway when he became the youngest ever player to play in a UEFA European Championship qualifier.

There is clearly no shortage of offers for the 15 year-old attacking midfielder and Liverpool would be delighted to seal what would be a massive coup for the club.

Sergio Romero – Sampdoria

Liverpool’s Achilles heel in recent seasons has been the ease in which they concede goals – and lots of them - so they could look towards the Argentina number one Sergio Romero to replace the haphazard Simon Mignolet. The current Liverpool stopper has made a string of high profile errors this season and does little to inspire confidence.

Romero, on the other hand, has cemented his reputation as of the top goalkeepers in World football with a commanding performance in the World Cup with Argentina and the stopper is tipped to switch to the red half of Merseyside.

The potential arrival of Romero will give Mignolet stiff competition for the number one jersey, which could see a marked improvement in the current Liverpool keeper, or Romero could slot straight into the first team – a win, win situation for the manager.

Andre Pierre Gignac – Marseille

The 29 year-old French striker could finally be leaving Ligue 1 with a January transfer to the Premier League.  The Marseille front man, who has weighed in with 11 goals in 16 games for his this season, has a contract which expires at the end of the season, so the club could be tempted to cash in January.

Liverpool are in the market for a striker and Gignac represents good value, albeit a short term fix given his age.

Gignac is not blessed with pace but has averaged a goal every two games during the last three seasons and current Marseille manager, Marcelo Bielsa, has the 29 year-old in top shape this season and is reaping the benefits with a glut of goals.

Spurs and Arsenal would also be interested in the experienced striker should the opportunity arise in the next window.

Paulo Dybala – Palermo

The Argentine 21 year-old striker is beginning to find his feet in Serie A after netting six goals in 13 games for Palermo – he has scored in each of his last four league games. Ironically, Liverpool passed up the opportunity to sign Dybala when Damien Comolli was at the club three years ago, but look poised to make a move should they get a second bite of the cherry.

Nevertheless, it won’t be an easy battle for the youngster dubbed “the new Aguero” as Arsenal, Manchester United and a hefty £30m+ price tag will make the race for his signature far from straight forward.

Get Odegaard signed up, that kid is too good to just allow him to slip through our fingers, especially seeing that he's a Liverpool fan.

Come on, this is us.  We will sign him, loan him back to Stromsgodset for three years, loan him out to Spain for two years and then sell him to Nantes for £3m and a set of training kit.

The only person Fsg will be targeting in January is Ronald Koeman.

Yep - he would sort out the free kick situation. Not sure he can last 90 minutes though

I'd take him over Lovren based on the season so far.

Josip radisavic is a beast in DM/CM, I got him for 5m, a steal. Him, a young Colombian CD by the name of Eder Balanta for 3m & Depay for around 15m up front.Won the league in my 1st season & got knocked out of Champs league by Barca in the semis. What the fuck is Rodgers playing at, there's players out there, relatively cheap. I managed to find them.

We were actually linked with Balanta in the Summer.

There seems to be a glut of up and coming strikers who would suit last year's tactics naturally - Laczette, Dybala, the lad at Valencia, Vietto etc. All could have been brought in this summer for a reasonable fee. How did we end up with the two we signed?

I'd love Cavani, a real statement of intent and a tacit acknowledgement of the fuck-up we made in the summer. I doubt we'll sign anyone or we'll do what we did last January and lurch around Europe doing lots of nothing.

I'd love a big-money signing at any of goalkeeper, DM or striker positions, but that's not going to happen.  We blew our cash in the summer and it will be limited to sales plus 5-10 million, so maybe 10 million.

It's going to be budget options or nothing in January.  I wouldn't mind a punt on that Croatian striker Kramaric, has 29 goals for some no-mark Croatian team including 7 in the Europa League this season and looks good in highlights.  I can't think of a DM we could go for, we probably need to wait for next summer and look to sell Allen/Lucas and upgrade there with someone like Carvalho.  I don't see the sense in buying a 5m player there this January because they probably won't be any better than the ones we already have.

Is there a goalkeeper out there that might be available in January?  That's the one position we could probably spend 5-10m and come away with a significant improvement.  Not a huge fan of Neto (who we're reportedly offering a huge contract) but maybe we could get one of the seemingly dozens of young German keepers (Leno, Zieler, etc) who are quality.

I'd buy Wilfred bony if we could get him for a fair price. I genuinely would. He offers something more than he's trying.

Bony will be gone in Jan to play the African cup of nations...

We need a DM first and foremost.

This is all wishful thinking, the big opportunity was the summer window. We flunked that and will get no one. Why would players come when they can see the ones we signed are relegated to the bench or beyond and that even the manager's signings are unceremoniously dumped?

A new keeper.

A midfield destroyer.

A goalscorer.

Never in a million years will that happen but the difference that would make to our team would be unreal which makes me wonder what the fuck it is the managers see.

It was the exact same positions in the summer that needed sorting and we went out our way to avoid addressing them.
