The Isle of Man

So many places to go. So little time, not enough money

For such a small place (Britain) there are so many places I havent been and would like to go to; the Isle of Man is definitely on that list. It sounds like it has a fascinating history

You should definitely go. I ridicule the place sometimes, and take all that history for granted. It's not until I hear other people talking about it that I start to feel a bit of pride in my heritage.

Born and raised there, left for NZ 5 years ago.

Nice scenery if you like that sort of thing, but you could save yourself a good few quid in boat or plane fares and just drive up to the Lake District if thats your bag.

TT fortnight is probably the best time to visit, but even thats not as good as it used to be.

Problem with the Isle of Man, as I touched on earlier, is its too expensive to get to. And theres next to fuck all to do once you get there. When you consider you could fly from JLA to the likes of Spain or Amsterdam for the same as it would cost you to fly to the IOM, its just not worth it. The Manx Government sold out its tourist industry in favour of the finance sector a long time ago.

Despite the above, I do feel some pride in my heritage. I just wouldn't recommend the place to holidaymakers. :-)

Look at the state of that smiley at the end of your post. You bad, bad twat.

I love the place and feel the need to get another IOM fix if I haven't been for 2 or 3 years.

First went there with me mum and dad when aged about 8 then again with the school when 9 or 10.

Went with mates when in my early 20s and we promptly got thrown off the island for a combination of fighting with a load of Scottish people who worked there, this just after the England Scotland match which was on the telly at the time during those long gone Home International days. Even then we didn't really give a fuck about England but we weren't taking any shit from those mouthy fuckers. Oh and we got the blame for smashing a shop window and robbing cameras or something which was actually done by some other Scousers who were there at the same time. The bizzies drove us from the police station to the ferry terminal and escorted us on to the ferry for all the world as if we were the Great Train Robbers.

They told us not to come back but they must have forgotten about it because they've let me back in quite a few times with me missus and again when the kids were young and again about 3 years ago for a long weekend.

It's not that expensive to get to because EasyJet fly there from Liverpool now, or they did last time I checked.

And I wouldn't say there's nothing to do when you get there either because there are an almost unlimited number of places to visit when travelling north on the electric railway when some of the scenery is stunning or, south on the steam train. There's the bus too to get to the places the 2 trains don't go to with 3, 5 or 7 day passes for unlimited travel on all 3 plus the horse drawn tram along Douglas prom. This makes said travel much cheaper than if you paid for each individual journey. I don't hire cars myself because alcohol will invariably be taken at some point on these outings.

Can't remember if those passes are valid for the mountain railway too but it's something worth doing, especially if you are there on one of the rare days when it's not cloudy and you can see all 7 kingdoms.

These kingdoms being (I'll probably get this wrong as I can never quite remember it) England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Man, Heaven and sure enough I can't remember the other one which should prove that after writing all this, I actually don't work for the IOM Tourist Board.

Yeah, a bit before my time but they used to have what was called "scottish weekends", when a whole load of pissheads from Scotland would descend on the island and cause mayhem. I've no idea how it originated, but it was quite a thing back in the day apparently.

They're debating on the horse trams at the moment. Government can't decide whether to run them at a reduced distance, or just do away with them altogether.

Something I found out recently was that the island has been suggested as one of several possible locations of Avalon from the Arthurian legends. I'm stoked because all that stuff fascinates me. I'm not saying that moistened bints were lobbing scimitars at people, but the characters and locations must have some basis in reality.

Beautiful coastline and sailing off the Isle of Man

Plenty of Dolphins and Basking Sharks which are big fuckers

Particularly like Port St Mary and Peel

Awesome smokery next to the harbour in Peel which does the best Kippers and smoked Bacon I've ever had

Well that was interesting, I've decided I like the Isle of Man.

Didn't realise they had their own notes there and took £50 out which I had to immediately take to a bank to get changed into English/Scottish notes because half of it was for getting back to Glasgow and then Edinburgh.

I wasn't expecting the accent at all, it sounded quite Lancastrian to me, am I miles out, I was only there for a day so I'm not sure?

Also the people were so friendly, I asked a girl in the office I was in where the confidential waste bin was and before I knew it three girls were helping me at the shredder, this is a bloke who usually repulses office females merely by having the timerity to share the same planet as them.

Also, here's a picture of my fucking plane, terrified doesn't even begin to cover it...

That's not the Isle of Man. Yeah it is, just kidding. Scary as shit them little planes, aren't they? I felt confused and angry the first time I got on a plane that was big enough to get up and walk around on.

Glad you enjoyed the place mate.

I hate flying at the best of times, so those flights were probably the longest two hours of my life, I'm just glad the weather was calm.

I'd like to go back in the summer for a piss up or maybe with the missus once the bairn is a bit older.

Ha. The Isle of Man airport was boss. Two security staff who both looked like Pam Ferris and called everyone love, one Costa and one shop.

When I was there the Everton under 10s were there flying back from a tournament, the coaches were all absolute scum, loud scally scum. One of them kept threatening to 'crack' one of the kids, true story.
