I think it's partially a product of a two party system where you have to treat the one of the parties as legitimate even when they are a gang of hyper right-wing fascist racist misogynistic accelerationists.

 

It's notable that the vast majority of their press is still going down the route of "How dare you, Sir!" rather than advocating for protests and physical confrontation to the abuses being perpetrated. I think in part it's because they have been softened up to the notion of stopping brown people entering their country, as they know that a tidal wave of humanity will be washing up on their shores (metaphorically obviously) when climate change kicks in. Which of course they have been heavily involved in perpetrating*.

Thing is though there's always been a fascist state hiding under the covers there, going back decades. People who weren't white or weren't rich getting their heads stoved in or shot at the drop of a hat. Their police force is militarised and they have a 'national guard' (I can't think of an equivelent of that - deployable troops for civic insurections - in any other western society.

 

Going through US border control at airports is always an absolutely horrific experience. They seem to purposely employ the biggest fucking retards they can find and give them shotguns. They speak to you and treat you like absolute shit by and large. Their world view seems to be that everyone from outside the States is part of the barbarian horde and should be treated as such.
