The current spell of bitterly cold weather is set to continue until around March, according to predictions issued today.

According to Jonathan Powell from Positive Weather Solutions, the current cold snap will continue until "the latter part of February or early part of March", interspersed with the occasional day or two of mild weather.

"This would be the case for both Ireland and the UK, and most of northern Europe, in fact," said Powell.

The west and northwest of Ireland are braced for worsening weather conditions later today after the east ground to a near-standstill yesterday.

That better be right, I'm gutted that it's started raining and turned all the snow to slushy icy crap. I don't really have faith on those long forecasts but will just have to hope.

Are many other weather people saying it'll carry on like this? Post links of them going on about it if so, need my hopes raising.

edit : BBC weather says this -

Monday 18 January 2010 to Sunday 31 January 2010

Little change at first

It will remain cold for the rest of January although there is a hint that temperatures may recover slightly towards the south and west eventually.

The weather will turn increasingly unsettled which may result in some further prolonged snowfalls - the west being more at risk during this time, although as temperatures pick up, southern parts could be more likely to see rain towards the end of the month.

It's going to get a little windy here apparently.

Some very strong winds are expected on Thursday in association with storm Doris with gusts of 60-70 mph likely, and 70-80 mph on coasts and hills. Whilst the strongest winds look to be only short-lived, damage to structures, interruptions to power supplies and widespread disruption to travel networks are likely, with a danger of injury from flying debris. Trees are also likely to be damaged or blown over. Heavy rain is also likely through Thursday as well as some snow over high ground as the system clears eastwards. These may prove additional hazards. The warning has been updated to extend the at-risk area southwards.

Right now

And midday

Bet there's still some knobs that will decide to go down to the prom to try to get some good videos.
