Best female singer ever.

How have we got this far without mention of Christina Aguilera? It probably wont be popular as she is not black enough, or from the 1950s, but she has a fantastic voice and compares to many on here, and is certainly much more talented then some that have been mentioned. An incredable singer.
She graduated from the school of 'why use one syllable when you can use thirty nine'. Other famous graduates include Maria Carey and Dion. And she blatantly has an extremely smelly vadge.

Yep, there is no doubt that female singers think nowadays that you have to finish with a traverse of about 9 octaves instead of holding a note. Doesn't take away from the fact she has an amazing voice. No one of Aguilares era comes close to her.

I'd like to smell her vadge.

Mariah Carey is a better singer the Aguilera I reckon.

Roy Orbison and Enrico Caruso were the only men in the entire 20th century to hit the note E flat.

Unfortunately, Christina Aguilera has done it since, which tarnishes the achievement somewhat.

You see. You see what I'm saying. Just because of some perceived viewpoint, all of a sudden a great voice isn't a great voice. What could possibly be unfortunate about someone having a great voice? Take the song "beautiful". A great song sung superbly.

Joni Mitchell is the greatest female vocalist of all time.

Ever.

Nobody even comes remotely close.

i was going to go with Franklin as well, but to be fair there are loads of great soul vocalists. Nobody can do what Joni Mitchell can do.

Good shout on Joni Mitchell.

Dirk mentioned Nina Simone. She'd be right up there. He version of Lilac Wine is a real spine tingler. Also a crazy mutha which earns extra points.
