Best actor of all time...

I couldn't say 'best ever' because there are so many great actors of the past whose films I haven't seen.

The likes of Marlon Brando would be up there purely for the sheer scope of his performances in Appocalypse Now, On the Waterfront and Godfather.

In terms of my own personal favourite actor around now, I'd put Pacino above De Nero myself.

I've never seen another screen actor produce such consistently detailed performances. However, I always know I'm watching De Niro. Sometimes a great performance is from an unknown where you only see them as the character they're playing.

Acting for the stage is an entirely different beast, though and comparisons between the two are next to impossible.

It's a shame TV actors still aren't regarded in the same league as film ones, I can't think of a single actor in Hollywood now who has produced as consistantly stunning performances as the likes of Walton Goggins from The Shield and Edward James Olmos in Battlestar Galactica.

Without putting too much thought into it, I'd like to give a shout out to some of the ones who could be in the running in a decade or so...

Dunno about best but I like Denzel Washington and Anthony Hopkins is always consistently brilliant. Cuba Gooding jnr seems to be a much under-rated actor who has put in fine performances in everything I've ever watched him in too, along with the obvious shouts for Edward Norton, Christian Bale and that dude who plays Wolverine.

As for actresses, Rachel Weiss manages to hold my interest.

I reckon it's too hard to call but my personal favourites are probably Jake Gyllenhall and Kevin Spacey. Don't think I've seen enough performances from the supposed greats to make a judgement on who's the best ever, at the minute I'd probably say De Niro from the range of roles I've seen him play.

I think the best TV performance is a bit easier to decide, and I'd go for Martin Sheen on The West Wing.

Pacino and De Niro have done way to much shit to be the outright great actor, you're allowed make one or two but they've been constantly churning out rubbish the last few years now.

Sometimes a great performance cannot save a bad script.

You could throw virtually the entire cast of The Wire into a debate like this without diluting the quality.

Yeah I agree, the only thing with The Wire though is that there are just so man great actors sharing screen time that it's hard to pin one down.

With Goggins though in the sixth season of The Shield (while he's still trying to come to terms with (spoilers ?) you know what, some of his stuff just left me speechless.

I genuinely can't remember the last time I could say that about a film actor, possibly Neeson in Schindler's List, but not many other candidates spring to mind.

Ye but their good films outweigh all that

I agree as De Niro in Raging bull is one of the best performances ever but they're really taking the gloss of their career.

If a De Niro film or Pacino film comes out now there's no way i'll rush out to see it as you know its more rubbish which is really sad to say.
