Strange question and I may be missing something obvious but this has been bugging me, wonder if anyone can shed any light...

Last night I was on a website trying to order something. I had the items in my basket but I'd forgotten my password and so couldn't get logged in. Sent a couple of password reset requests but no link arrived to reset, so I never got logged in. However, this morning I get one of thoses emails from the site saying I still have items in my basket, etc. So how could it know I have items in my basket and thus send the email to my address if I never got logged in?

Sounds like standard cookie based session management.  i.e. it stored a cookie in your browser the last time you logged in. So when you went back the browser sent the cookie identifying you, and hence the website knew who you were (or your device anyways), it just needed you to prove it was you (by logging in).

OK, thanks, so that's perfectly normal? I don't know why but it freaked me out a bit.
