The ‘Exercise, Fitness, Health, and Well-being’ Thread

Recommended Posts

So, there seems to be quite a few threads scattered around on diet (the ‘Sick if being fat’ thread), which has bled over into Keto talk, and a Bulletproof coffee thread, plus some random Gym and Bike threads. So, that indicates that quite a few of us are looking at improving ourselves, both physically and our general health and longevity. With that said, I propose we build a little community of us here who are into it. If only for information, support, and maybe even inspiration for other members.

Other than a place for general health and well-being discussion, we can have a pool of knowledge in general health, track progress via fitness apps, weight loss, muscle gain, etc. It could be a good place to link podcasts, articles, fitness videos, etc, too. Oh, and supplement talk. We need to get in those krill pills! Or exogenous ketones. Or something. It will be good to have somewhere to post for advice.

I’ll start by saying that I’m not getting enough cardio. I’ve gone from cycling 10 miles per day (and double that on the days I had football and martial arts because I cycled to them) to zero miles, no footy, and no martial arts. I also don’t feel as strong as I once did. I certainly don’t have the insane stamina that I once did. It’s purely down to my lack of physical training. So I think I’m going to buy some kit to help that.

First bit of advice I’d like is on a spin bike for my home. I don’t want to spend thousands, but I do want to cycle without having to run the risk of accidents and getting piss soaked through. Price: max is around 250-300. Somewhere around that anyway.

Second... should I be doing weights? Rogan and Jocko are always banging on about kettle bells. I don’t want to bulk, but I do want to get stronger. Final thing... Yoga for strength, or calisthenics maybe? I saw a group of excellent videos on calisthenics that I will link up. Thoughts on doing that type of fairy shit?

Weights is a must for me. Both for strength, weight management and overall fitness. The one thing that drives me round the twist though is normal people like us spending hours doing curls with different grips, forearm rolls, calf raises with different stances and many other completely worthless exercises.

Unless you are a competitor or model (like me) spending hours doing supplementary isolation exercises for tiny muscle groups is a waste of time. Especially if your goal is weight loss. You cannot build muscle in a calorie deficit and you cannot loose weight in a calorie surplus. Pick one or the other. No point trying to build big calf’s while trying to loose weight at the same time. It won’t happen. Certain newcomers being the rare exception.

45 mins 3 times a week lifting heavy stuff off the floor. Up in the air and up and down with your legs is more than enough for 95% of the public. It’s not very sexy though so gyms and trainers try to out do each other with more and more complicated and specific routines. Usually balanced on a fucking beach ball.

Functional movements carried out under increasing resistance. Rotating weight and rep range every week or two. That’s it. That’s all there is. After many months reasses then split it up a bit but still based on the same base compound exercises.

Any tips for getting rid of a beer gut that don’t involve giving up the Guinness?

Ask Jason Mamoa

He got into his Aquaman shape drinking a Guiness every night. Though you'd need to lift heavy 5-7 days a week for 2hrs a day and add a but of rock climbing in too

Fucking bastard.

I’ve got to get really shredded. I can’t drink as much beer as I normally would like to! For Game of Thrones, Kahl Drogo was great. All I did was lift, eat pizza and drink Guinness. Now, I have to watch my girlish figure.

I’m doing plenty of the second two. Just lacking that wee bit of lifting weights.

Tonight I'm going to have a bulletproof guiness, some beans on a pizza, a pint of coffee, fart while watching porn and wank while doing some weights.

This thread rocks!

Really enjoying the running 6 to 8 mile runs a day,cut the bread out and most of the usual shite feel better for it,weighing 13-9 now it seem to have levelled out at that after losing over 3 stone (since October),happy enough and feeling better.

I like a bevvy to much to cut it out so I haven't stopped and I wouldn't to be honest.

I had this dead good idea of getting into good habits, like using the stairs instead of the lift. When I came back to work after my lunch yesterday, I did the full 11 floors, for the first time in ages, and barely had time to collapse into my chair before there was a bastard fire drill and I had to walk all the way back down again.

I'm getting too old for this shit.

Cheers mate, hopefully I'll kick on once I can get back in a routine. I'm going again tomorrow so will just try to increase distance bit by bit.

Your progress is brilliant and has motivated me, I really enjoy running it's like a form of meditation because nothing else matters during your run other than pushing yourself through it and overcoming negative thoughts to give up.

Get that Nike App it really is good it tracks all your runs and Cal's burned and it does make you try and better each run time.

I’ve been doing spinning classes lately. I hate instructional classes because I’m a know it all and what do these dicks know. First one was taken by a young girl about 6 stone wet through. I thought this will be a piece of piss if she is doing it. She nearly killed me.

They have been a bit of a revelation for me. I’m doing 8-10 a week. 6am and 7pm. I’ve considered a bike for home but it will just take up space and end up as a clothes horse. I’d get to classes. Many times I’ve had to drag myself to the class but hit it hard when there. If that was at home I would have stayed in bed.

Yeah, I heard they’re intense as fuck. I just read something on Reddit, they said 20 minutes in they had accept d that at age 20 and 362 days they had accepted that this was they day they were going to die.

As I said in the OP, I used to be somebody that cycled up to a hundred miles per week. I want to get back to where I’m putting serious miles in.
