It's regularly colder than this in several parts of Siberia, mate. I live down towards Mongolia but we're actually the second-coldest region in Russia despite being further south than others, no large bodies of water nearby to modulate temperature. Gets up to +40 in the summer as well.

I actually believe you though, my wife's family are from Kazakhstan and have known temperatures that cold (hotter in summer, possibly not quite as cold as regularly as -53c) and would be on a similar latitude.

A work colleague arrived in work on Saturday announcing himself as the Beast from the East. Maybe not the most appropriate in our line of work.

 

Weather update. We have had a sprinkling of snow overnight. I've been instructed to go out and panic buy
