Had high hopes for the lad.

Liverpool full-back Jon Flanagan is due to be sentenced today after for assaulting his girlfriend with a "kick" during a drunken night out.

Flanagan, 25, was arrested in the early hours of December 22 on Duke Street in Liverpool city centre and will be sentenced at Liverpool Magistrates Court.

The club should have sacked him imo

'He saw the male throw the female into a wall and kick her when she was on the floor'

Judge Wendy Lloyd has returned to court. Ironically there appear to be some issues playing the CCTV on the court TV screens.

The court usher is asked to fetch Flanagan.

He is escorted to the dock wearing a black suit, dark blue tie and white shirt.

He is asked to confirm his name and address and takes a seat.

Mr Currums brings the case up on his laptop and will begin proceedings.

He begins by reading a witness statement.

A witness calls Merseyside Police saying a male was attacking a female,

He saw the male throw the female into a wall and kick her when she was on the floor.

“He heard loud voices coming from outside in Duke Street he went onto the balcony he saw a group of people walking along in a loud manner.

He saw the female walking ahead of the male who was behaving in an agitated manner.

He says Flanagan grabbed Ms Wall outside Il Forno and pushed her against a wall.

The witness thought Flanagan was trying to kiss her.

He heard the female say: “You are out of order”

The male replied: “Shut up I will f***** knock you out.”

It is a red flag for why his career is in the situation it’s in. Taking away the fact he appears to be a bit of a nasty cunt why is he out on the ale to the point he can’t remember what happened? Whether the club decides to terminate his contract with this conviction or not I think he’s done here anyway. Another waster thinking he can get away without being professional. Everyone wondered why he couldn’t get a game at Burnley and it’s pretty obvious now. I think he will probably drop further and further down the leagues over the next 5/6 years robbing a living as he lives off the fact he’s played for Liverpool.

If Salah did the same to his missus then I doubt many on here would be calling for him to get sacked.

I don't think thats likely to happen. The Gerrard incident probably has a little bit more in common in terms of it being violent. I think both Gerrard and Flanagan would have done time if they were manual workers or unemployed.

He's been punished, he will now start his rehabilitation. Nobody can condone what he has done, he has a lot of work to do now to repair that damage.

What is it with people wanting to pile on punishments for some while wanting really evil cunts to be given a break?

I don't think he has a future here but then I didn't think that before this occurred.

A unique concept to think that Gerrard would have done time but for his job, particularly when he wasn't even found guilty of a single criminal offence.

As for the average working man would've done time argument, nope. For common assault, first offence, early guilty plea and several mitigating factors raised, you're always likely to be looking at a non-custodial community based sentence, irrespective of what your job is.

I agree but I would still think he was a complete prick and I’d probably be happy to see him sold. Kicking a woman on the floor is pretty vile. I wouldn’t want Salah sacked because he holds a value for the club and it would only end up benefitting him. At 28k a week Flanagan is taking more than his value in wages based on his form and potential years ago. I would happily see him sold as well but I can’t imagine there would be too many buyers willing to pay him that. I’m not ashamed to say I’d take this opportunity to fuck him off and not through any moral obligation. He would deserve it for that behaviour anyway though.

Big case beaut.

That made me laugh out loud so it's a good job I'd left.

It was a bit of a media circus his morning. There were abut 10 journos sat to one side, typing away. It seemed a bit of overkill. Then the CPS couldn't get their CCTV to work on the court screen, only the laptop. Flanno's solicitor suggested the District Judge watch it in chambers, but she decided to grandstand by by giving the 'court of public record and justice must be seen to be done' speech. So they all watched it with the laptop turned towards the journos.

The club have confirmed that an internal disciplinary procedure will now be carried out.

I reckon he'll get sacked.

I think it would be quite a strange statement on our behalf if we didn't? That said, it would set a precedent and if a big star does something like that in the future, no matter how much money there is involved, he'd need to be treated the same.

I'm beginning to think the club could do worse than deal with this by way of a hefty fine, and an announcement that they are getting him some assistance with his issues. Follow that process with a short interview with a friendly journo. One rehabilitated player good to go. If the club chose not to renew his contract after that, so be it.
