Which version do you like the most?  I find it very hard to separate them but I think I prefer Lanegan's dark interpretation (Kurt does a bit of guitar feedback/screaming on this version but it's essentially a Lanegan solo effort).

That anguished scream at the end still sends shivers down my spine. Especially since a few months later he was dead.

Leadbelly for me. The tempo of the track and the gravitas of his voice I think nail the sentiment more than a slower version.

 

The Grateful Dead did an interesting rendition though.

Bill Callahan does a different, more relaxed take on it that’s well worth a listen too.

The Lanegan one is a real grower and his voice suits the lyrics perfectly.

 

It's really hard to separate all three.

As soon as I saw the thread title I started singing "In the pines, in the pines where the sun never shines" Opened it out of curiosity and saw that it was about that song. I've always known it by a less politically correct title and the Leadbelly in my collection and the Long John Baldry version use the non PC title.

Sanitizing Leadbelly, FFS. They'd probably have to beep out half his lyrics these days.

The Cobain version for me.  It was that album that made me persevere when I was learning to play guitar.  Discovering guitar tab and learning that Cobain tuned his guitar down do a drop D enabled me to play along with some of my favourite songs on that album, the very first time I was able to do so.  And this song is the crowning glory of that whole magnificent unplugged performance.
