Standard of goalkeeping

Keepers I reckon used to be protected more,  Defenders defended and weren't expected to be wingers and midfield playmakers

Defenders were allowed to defend as well. These days you can commit a foul without actually touching an opponent. It's no wonder that the overall standard of defending in top flight football is at the lowest level for as long as I can remember.

Having a ball that changes direction several times in flight makes it harder.

This is largely, but not completely the answer. Footballs have been designed to move more and make goals more likely under orders from FIFA. They have toyed with the idea of bigger goals but me hostility so the next best thing is to mess with the football. Unless you are a keeper or keeper coach its not easily noticeable. British goalkeeping coaching is years behind the continentals and why we can't produce top class keepers any more.

I've just watched some Chelsea loanee (who'll likely never play for them) score an own goal for vitesse from the weekend.

It could well be dodgy, but if nothing more than a fluke fuck up, the goalkeeping is genuinely in existent.

Not even tried.

I think British goalies fell behind when coaches refused to acknowledge punching and foot control as essential parts of the art of goalkeeping and the back pass rule helped foreign keepers massively.

They have that clip on the BBC football page and to my mind, the bigger fuck-up is the goalkeeper's. As you say, he didn't even look like he was trying. He obviously couldn't touch it with his hands as it was a back pass, but he had a lot of time and space to chest it down or even head it clear. Eurosport used to show highlights from various European leagues including the Eredivisie, and the goalkeeping was always awful.

"He's a good shot stopper"

Hate that line, its what they're all supposed to fuckin do!

He's good at swimming, that life guard.

Sound how he's good at flying that plane, the pilot.

That runner, he's really good at running in a straight line dead quick, isn't he.

Hate that line.
