Rafa wanting Gareth Barry to replace Xabi Alonso. What the fuck was the great man thinking?

Just watching this:

Don't want to turn this into a Rafa sank/batter fest but this particular subject fucking rilles me. I love Alonso in so many ways. As a player, a man, his dick, his beard. The lot. Gareth Barry was never and has never been fit enough to lace this Spanish gods boots.

The fact that the only reason why he wasn't the best midfielder at the club during his time is a certain Steven Gerrard says it all for me. If I had to choose between Gareth Barry, Xavi Alonso and Steven Gerrard, Gerrard would narrowly beat Alonso with Barry a distant third.

Still, he was the best Spanish midfielder at the club and Gerrard cannot stop him there.

He thought he could get £20 million for Alonso and sign Barry for between 8 and 12 million. He also felt Barry was more versatile than Alonso, able to play on the left either in defence or midfield.

At the time I was annoyed about it but I understood our reasons for wanting to sell. In hindsight it was the wrong decision, but not quite as stupid as it sounds.
