Having the telly on when people visit

I've always done it for background noise but the Mrs thinks it's rude, thoughts?

 

Personally I've never just seen a telly as something you turn on to watch a particular show and then turn off, it is omnipresent, even when there's nothing on.

I think it's only rude if you're sitting watching it & ignoring your guests. I'd rather have background music on myself to be honest.

Actually the MiL constantly pops round since the baby. But given that she spends her time here looking after the kid, cleaning or delivering food, I don't really consider her a visitor anymore - more like unpaid help
