Tried it for the first time yesterday on Sky Q and I have to say i'm underwhelmed. It basically looks like proper 1080p that you get from a Blu Ray.

I believe that the Sky signal is compressed so you lose some quality and that's why 1080p on a Blu Ray looks better than a channel on Sky broadcasting at 1080.

Anyone else tried it?

I can't provide any input.  But, apart from the disappointment regarding the 4K, how on the whole is the Sky Q experience?  Sky are still to get back to me after serving notice to terminate my contract, but I'm just curious as to whether it's worth renewing - and I'll only be doing this of I get the Sky Q - or sticking with my contingency and reverting to a Zgamma box?

I've yet to upgrade to a 4K set, but it seems streamed content is still a bit on the weak side bit-rate / compression wise, hence why we're still looking at a disc-based future with UHD BD.

HDR's supposed to be more of a noticeable difference than the upgrade in resolution for the average joe. Netflix said that they'd drop a 4K stream down to 1080p but keep it in HDR rather than maintain the resolution at the cost of HDR.

Have you tried any of the 4K NASA clips yet? That's going to be my first port of call when I finally get a new telly.

The YouTube clips of 4k are stunning but the Sky stuff doesn't come close. It's a similar situation to 1080 as I said earlier, the stuff you'll get on disc will look boss but the tv channels will be a bit lacking.

As for Sky Q, i'm still getting used to it but i'm starting to really like it. The voice recognition is really good. This morning I asked it what live sport was on today and it listed it all. You can also find stuff by famous quotes as well, the recognition is brilliant.

The fluid viewing is actually really handy too. We've just moved so we're not letting our lad eat food in the living room (new carpet and that) so we just pause and then record whatever he's watching and then pick it up in the kitchen. Really convenient.

At this early stage i'd recommend it.

So I watched the derby today in 4k and as expected it was like a Blu Ray to my uneducated eyes. Not a bad thing at all but equally nowhere near as dramatic as the jump from SD to HD.

I remain relatively underwhlemed although it was still a bit better than HD.

I've actually realised that 4k looks boss but only when you sit close to the telly. So I should have bought bigger than 55 inch to be honest.

Something for others to consider.

The Alpha's section inside Phoenix on Kodi, has over 150 4k films and he also has a 4k tv series section

Some look amazing, others not so much. Defo worth a look though.

I'm in early stages of looking into the possibility of monitoring and then swooping for a 4K TV. I have seen a Hisense 50inch and same manufacturer's 55inch TVs and £399 and £499 respectively which seems reasonable.

Are there any budgets that have been set for likeminded individuals who have actually made the swoop rather than just simply eyeing a move?

I'd be getting bigger than 50 or 55 if I were you mate based on my experience.

Got my LG 55 from Currys in the week before Black Friday. Cost £550 and it's the dogs bollocks.

Ridiculously big! I'd get a 65" if I could go back.

I've just seen a 65", crikey I think I would be worried that the whole street could get a free viewing! Not sure if I have the space but I will take a look at one and see with my own eyes.

I will take a look in Currys and see their range, sounds like that's just in my budget but if I can get bigger for a reasonable price I would consider it.

One thing though mate, the bigger and better the tv, the more glaringly obvious any flaws in your feed or signal become.

If you're gonna upscale then make sure you've got access to HD channels or you will be sadly underwhelmed.

This is one reason why I reckon I'll stick at 55" for my next set. I still watch a fair bit of crappy bitrate freeview channels, so anything larger and it'd be tough to sit through.

Open Phoenix and there are a number of sub-sections, including one called The Alpha. Inside of that there is a Real Debrid sub-section. Inside of that is all the 4k, 3D, 1080p stuff.

Mac computer question for anyone in the know. IMac died after many years.

Looking between the 1080p 21.5” and the 4K 21.5”.

Trying to keep costs down, don’t need the 4K screen tbh - question is, will the 1080p itself be obsolete within the next 5 years or so?

Want to keep costs down, but not at the cost of not being “future-proofed”.
