Having had this game a couple of weeks, how are people finding it now?

Very mixed reviews, basically saying it is all the same and boring.

It's massively repetetive, there are no missions, no side missions, very little in the way of leveling up (apart from inventory slots), it has trillions of planets yet nothing different to do on each and seems like a skeleton of a game waiting for the real game mechanics to be built on it.

 

Yet despite that I can't stop playing it.

Yep, it's a weird one.

 

For the first hour you're constantly watching the shield/health/enviroment bar panicking it'll run out and mining any shit you see despite lacking the capacity to stockpile them.

 

Once you get used to the mechanics and realise that the whole purpose of the game is one long loop (you fly/walk around looking for resources to replenish health/shield/enviromentals to allow you to fly/walk around looking for resources to replenish health/shield/enviromentals to allow you to fly/walk around.....) and resources are abundant so you don't need to stockpile, everything is a bit more relaxed and you can set your own objectives.

 

It's not a game as much as it is an exploration simulator so if you don't go in looking to achieve something or progress a story and just enjoy the technical achievement and mill around flying from planet to space to other planet with no break in game play for loading in new worlds you might enjoy it.

 

Hopefully future updates add a bit more purpose to the game and more importantly consequences, then it could develop into something.

Sums it up nicely.

 

I like to chuck on a podcast or some tunes whilst doing a bit of resource gathering and trading. I'm doing my best to exploit the price differences so I can afford a decent ship. Buy low and sell high! Just got my first 100% on a planet too.

You don't need to spend money on a ship (or multi tool for that matter). If you use the waypoints to search for transmissions you'll be directed to distress calls of crashed ships, repair them in the same way you repaired your ship at the beginning of the game and you can use it.

 

It works incrementally so if you have a ship with 14 slots you'll almost always find a ship with either 13 or 15 slots. A ship with 15 will always find ships with 14 or 16 etc.

 

It works the same for buying ships so if you use the free method to get up to the capacity you want you can then save your money to spend on a ship with the design you like.

I'm still planning to be an interstellar Gordon Gekko though, as I like to trade in these kinds of games and amass a small fortune, just in case there's something towards the end game that may require a grind to afford it.

I've hit the wall, and I think I'm done with it.

 

I spent about an hour trying to fix a downed ship, the game crashed and upon reloading the ship disappeared and so did the marker for another downed ship on the planet. As well as my inventory which I'd shifted over to the new ship. Hours upon hours of mineral gathering and trading down the drain.

 

The survival elements are good, but the repetition of buildings and the same aliens has just bludgeoned any enthusiasm I have to carry on. Not sure I've ever had such a 180 on a game before, where I've gone from loving it to absolutely sick of it.

Hello Games have come out of hiding and released the first major update including the majority of the things that should have been there at launch (though, for a game based on economy, discovery and resource gathering it's still crying for multi player functionality).

 

 

Game Modes

 

Explorers can now decide to play with different rule sets, across three game modes:

 

Normal mode - is the original chilled exploration experience.

Creative mode - allows players to explore the universe without limits, and build a huge base.

Survival mode - really changes the game, creating a much more challenging endurance experience

 

Base Building

 

Claim your home planet by finding an uninhabited base and creating your own, fully bespoke outpost.

 

Construct your homestead for shelter, using modular structures and decorations, replicated from resources gathered while exploring.

 

Recruit alien lifeforms to help research new technology. Farming, engineer, weapons and science specialists are hirable from Space Stations.

 

Use Terminus Teleporters in Space Stations to teleport to and from your base at will.

 

Expand your base with storage containers to stockpile precious resources and rare products.

 

Find an even more beautiful location and you can simply dismantle your previous homestead to refund all of the spent resources.

 

Freighters

 

Purchase huge interstellar Freighters at great expense, and then summon them from anywhere in the galaxy.

 

Resources can be teleported to your Freighter while on-planet, ideal for stockpiling goods for trading.

 

Customise the inside of your Freighter within the Base Building section.

 

Create extended cargo holds to expand your vessel’s capacity, and grow crops of rare resources on board.

 

Transport your Freighter and its cargo to different, more economically favourable systems to maximise your earnings.

 

Use the new recruitment system to crew your Freighter with Engineer, Farmer, Weapons and Science specialists to help research new technologies.
