Its a long standing joke that the Foreign Legion was where people would join to escape convictions, abandon loved ones etc. Did you never watch The Flying Deuces?

I know about the running off to the legion. Never seen the film, worth a watch?

But there did seem to be some good times.

A Christmas football match, eating carrier pigeons, pretending to be mental by putting your pants on your head and two pencils up your nose. Bombing the shit out the Germans and slowly walking over no mans land to take the Germans surrender.

And laughing at the Germans hats

How boring was the first world war though? Sat in a ditch for years with athlete's foot surrounded by Belgians. Shite.

So what you are saying, this was one of those rare instances when the sequel was better than the original?

Superior drama, more action, better villains.

I'd say it was an Alien/Aliens Terminator/T2 comparison. Claustrophobic, psychological thrillers vs big action budgets.

Or maybe Mad Max 2. In 1 you have indications and hints, but it is the sequel that actually creates and establishes the universe in which subsequent  MM films take place, much as we still live to a considerable extent in a post WWII world.

It was a beautifully planned sequel... all the executive producers sitting round the table in Versailles, methodically planning the exposition.

20 years in the making.

Just add disaffected Germania, nutter & water.  And stir.

World War 2 was a masterstroke production.

Who would've thought the "extras" death count from 1 could have been so improved upon.
