England and Scotland have been drawn in the same group for qualification for the 2018 World Cup in Russia.

The two sides will also face Slovakia, Slovenia, Malta and Lithuania in Group F after the draw in St Petersburg.

Wales - aiming to reach their first finals since 1958 - are top seeds in Group D and will also play Republic of Ireland.

Northern Ireland will play World Cup holders Germany in Group C, while Spain and Italy meet in Group G.

In another tough group, the Netherlands were drawn with France and Sweden.

The winner of each of the nine European groups qualify automatically alongside hosts Russia, with the best eight runners-up entering the play-offs in November 2017.

Roy Hodgson last night warned England face football’s “fiercest rivalry” after getting Scotland in the World Cup draw.

Hodgson’s men will face the old enemy in Group F of their qualifying campaign on the way to Russia for the 2018 tournament.

It looks another easy Group for England as they were also matched with Slovakia, Slovenia, Lithuania and Malta but it is Gordon Strachan’s Scots who will really fire the imagination.

England boss Hodgson said: “The atmosphere is everything it’s cracked up to be and it always lives up to its title as one of the fiercest national team derbies.

“It’s the fixture which will capture the imagination because England-Scotland fixtures go back a long, long way in history and there’s been many a fierce encounter over the years.

“It is a very fierce rivalry with Scotland and that’s good. “You will see a good game, an intense team and both will be highly motivated and arguably you will see some good football, too. Let’s hope so.”

England have beaten Scotland twice within the past two years - 3-2 at Wembley in August 2013 and 3-1 at Celtic Park last November - and will be red-hot favourites.

But Scotland boss Gordon Strachan, who stayed at Hampden Park at an event for Scottish fans, said they were “delirious” about the draw.

Strachan said: “It’s a draw which will make a lot of people happy. You see the reaction in terms of the fans - just as the sun came out in Glasgow - when it came out the hat that we’d play England.

“There were a lot of delirious punters here at Hampden. I can see because it is a fantastic fixture. The whole of Scotland and England will look forward to the games.”

Scots: Strachan is looking forward to the showdown

Scotland FA president Alan McRae added “We have a chance of beating England especially at home. We’re delighted . England are a top team. There will be an amazing atmosphere at both games.”

Meanwhile, under-fire FIFA official Jack Warner was left facing a trip to the United States after the World Cup draw threw up an embarrassing match.

Warner’s Trinidad and Tobago was drawn in the same Group as the US. He has already been indicted on corruption charges.
