James Milner is....

He was 7 at City, so it's logical he takes it. There really isn't a right option for him though, if he takes 8 then he's lumbered with the Gerrard replacement hyperbole, and if he swerves 7 he looks a bit gutless.

Shirt numbers are a distraction anyway, it all boils down to the same thing - don't be shit.

It's only a number.

Yes, it's a number that carries a lofty tradition and is attached to some of the best players we've ever had, but still it's a number, that's all.

If it can only ever be worm by the best then it should be earned and not given, unless we buy someone already proven to be the best, which means Suarez shouldn't have been given it either.

The fact we can say that the number is special is a wonderful thing because it means we've had special players at the club, but it doesn't mean we can or should expect it only ever to be filled by somebody that can be at that level. The introduction of squad numbers changed what numbers mean a long time ago.

If messi wanted to come here and we signed him, and he said he wanted milners 7 shirt, great. And I'm sure Milner would drop it in a heartbeat, from everything I've ever heard of the lad.

But if messi came and wanted to wear 62, do you know what, I'd let him.
