Lionel Messi and Jose Mourinho revealed as top earners in football

Lionel Messi earned more than €1 million a week last year to make him the world's highest-paid player, a France Football survey has revealed, while Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho was the best-paid coach.

The magazine estimated the 27-year-old Messi picked up some €65 million in 2014 between his Barcelona salary, various bonuses and sponsorship revenue.

The Argentina international's new contract, signed only last May, saw him increase his basic annual salary to €36 million before tax, while his revenue from endorsements for companies such as Turkish Airlines and the FIFA console games has increased by €2 million to €28 million-a-year.

Messi, who is likely to equal David Beckham's record of finishing top of France Football's list for a sixth time next year, is well clear of La Liga rival Cristiano Ronaldo, despite the Real Madrid star significantly increasing his income over the last 12 months.

Ronaldo 30, added around €15 million to his revenue to take himself to €54 million a year, while Messi's Barcelona teammate Neymar came in third, improving his own revenue from €29 million to €36.5 million.

Nine players have annual earnings of more than €20 million, including Paris Saint-Germain captain Thiago Silva, on €27.5 million a year to be Ligue 1's highest-paid player, while Zlatan Ibrahimovic is eighth on €21.5 million.

Manchester United duo Robin van Persie (5th, €25.6 million) and Wayne Rooney (7th, €22.5 million) sit either side of Gareth Bale, who earns €23.8 million.

Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero is the third Premier League player in the top 10, weighing in at €21.2 million in ninth, just ahead of Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski (10th, €20.2 million), with Eden Hazard and Yaya Toure joint 11th on €20 million.

Mourinho, 52, earned €18 million last year to top the poll of managers, putting him €2.5 million ahead of Madrid boss Carlo Ancelotti.

Bayern Munich's Pep Guardiola is third with €15.2 million with Premier League pair Arsene Wenger (€11.3 million) and Louis van Gaal (€10 million) completing the top five.

The figures might not be that current in each case, but none of our highest paid players are in the top 20 in the world, and Rodgers places 19th out of the top 20 highest paid coaches. To get to the top of the tree is difficult enough but it's increasingly becoming apparent that to stay there takes considerable resources and makes it even harder to break into the top tier of the global game.

Most of the players you see in that list you would expect to see there, but the absence of Suarez in that list suggests to me why the figures aren't current. As for coaches, Di Matteo is getting paid a fortune off the back of 2 spawny cup wins, and Rodgers' lack of silverware means you'd not expect to see him placed very high up. It doesn't explain why Moyes is having money thrown at him though!

Surely Falcao makes that list

Straight in at Number 13.

The mancs have 4 in the Top 20.

If we'd beaten them last week I'd be laughing at that.

COME ON REDS - make them the least successful side with the highest wage bill!

I assume this list is based on overall earnings and not just wages? Its no surprise to me we don't have anyone in the top 20 (although Gerrard was in the last one of these I saw), we don't pay the absolute top wages and we mean towards young players, which means they'll likely have a smaller value with personal sponsors.

As for the managers list, aside from a few at the top, those wages are much of a muchness (or richness as my auto correct on my phone has just tried to do). Again for me, no real surprise, we have a reasonably inexperienced coach, it would be a shock to see him in the top 10.

The article says as much when talking about how endorsements bump up the players' earnings. They cite Messi as the obvious example but it applies to all the top players these days. We aren't near the top when it comes to pay, but we also don't sign players with the sort of high-profile that brings in those numbers. Certainly in the FSG era, I think only Balotelli can be classed as a high-profile signing. Everybody else was young and upcoming, or reasonably experienced but not high-profile.

One thing I think we can safely say is that this list will have many more Premier League players in it over the next 3-4 years, particularly when the next TV deal kicks in. Current players will all be looking for improved deals and players from abroad will mostly come here for the money. I think that last point is what has made the Premier League and FA start talking about restrictions on imports.

A bigger problem for the state of the English game is that this extra money won't go far enough in improving standards. The money will be too good even at mediocre Premier League clubs that young English players will continue to go where the money is rather than where they'll experience what it is like to play for titles, trophies and European football. Basically the sort of things that players in other countries are much more amenable to experiencing and why their national teams are more successful at youth level and why they usually end up being targetted by the biggest clubs.

The same goes for managers in this country. I think they'd rather stay in England and ride the gravy train of mediocrity rather than chance their hand elsewhere. The only ones that have tried elsewhere in the past decade are McClaren and Moyes, and both only did so because they failed in their big jobs and the only options available here were mid-table mediocrity at best.

I could understand if Rodgers was unhappy with that list, though looking at Luis Enrique I think he's best off keeping quiet.

It's funny to see that the combined income of Messi and Neymar is 101.5million, whereas their manager is on 5.5million.  Hmm, little wonder Enrique was quick to back-track on any falling-out with Messi earlier in the season.  Very unhealthy situation.

I'd pay Rodgers 10million, and let it be known he was in charge of the team, no player above him.
