Arsenal U23 1 Liverpool U23 2

Flashscores has us in front in stoppage time.

The Arsenal blogger has been tweeting that their keeper has made a couple of good saves to keep us out.

Sam Hart with a free kick looks to have given us the 3 points.

Full time - Liverpool 2 Newcastle 2

Good game to watch. We improved defensively in the second half, with the midfield and forwards doing more defending from the front than they did in the first 45.

Definitely should have had a penalty at the end when the Newcastle full back used his hand to stop Rafa Camacho going past him in the box.

The second penalty shout might have just been an accidental tangle of legs as Simmonds tried to burst through a crowd. Seen them given.

18s Offal Match Report

Liverpool U18s were held to a 2-2 draw in an action-packed meeting with Newcastle United at the Academy on Friday night.

Glen McAuley grabbed a pair of classic poacher finishes in the first half, only for the visitors to respond on each occasion through Lewis Cass and Thomas Allan to ensure the teams were on level terms at the interval.

Curtis Jones went closest to a decisive third in a quieter second period but the sides ultimately had to settle for a point apiece under the floodlights in Kirkby.

The home team did not have to wait long for a breakthrough.

Jordan Hunter was afforded time on the right edge of the penalty area to pick out Liam Millar at the opposite post, and his intelligent knock back across goal was ideal for McAuley to drive the ball into the roof of the net.

The satisfaction with the striker’s second of the new season was short-lived, though, as Newcastle restored parity within three minutes.

A flat set-piece sent in from the left channel found Cass in space inside the box and the centre-back took full advantage by directing a neat finish into the bottom corner.

Liverpool’s bright start to the game would have been completely undone were it not for an excellent Dan Atherton save, just past the quarter-hour mark.

Allan met an inviting cross with a firm header eight yards from goal – but Atherton’s reactions on the stretch were exactly as required and the dangerous effort was tipped over.

Steven Gerrard’s charges re-took the lead on 34 minutes and it was McAuley on the mark again.

The Republic of Ireland youth international was the grateful recipient for a straightforward header when Anthony Glennon threaded a slide-rule pass into Adam Lewis on the left to loft a perfect assist into the middle.

But Newcastle struck back once more, finding a route through to the run of Allan in behind the backline and the forward rolling the ball through the legs of the advancing Atherton.

The tempo dipped to a degree when the action resumed, though Jones went extremely close to putting Liverpool back in front as the clock reached an hour.

Another excellent Lewis delivery – this time a deep, dropping corner from the right hand side – handed Jones the chance to plant a header toward goal that was carefully pushed away by the ‘keeper.

The Reds No.10 had sparked into life and more industrious approach play by Lewis on the left preceded Jones shimmying into space inside the box and blasting too high from 10 yards.

Two reasonable penalty appeals by the hosts were rejected late on, either side of a squandered chance by Allan rushing in to connect with a cross at the far post, and it therefore ended without a winner.

Liverpool U18s: Atherton, Hunter, Lewis, R Williams, Glennon, Coyle (Griffiths, 90), Longstaff (Camacho, 21), Tagseth, McAuley (Simmonds, 67), Jones, Millar. Unused substitutes: Raitanen, B Williams.

23s Offal Match Report

Liverpool U23s extended their winning start to the Premier League 2 season to three games with a 2-1 victory over Arsenal on Friday night.

The Londoners took the lead in the clash at Boreham Wood, with Reiss Nelson’s goal three minutes into the second half edging the home team in front.

But the young Reds, who had won each of their opening two matches of the campaign without a concession, levelled through Rhian Brewster’s 70th-minute equaliser.

And Sam Hart proved the hero when his free-kick screamer with one of the last kicks of the game whistled into the back of the net from distance.

Danny Ings, again clocking up minutes with the U23s, was typically involved in the best of the early goalmouth action, seeing a one-on-one saved by the goalkeeper from Yan Dhanda’s through ball.

The same pair combined midway through the first half but the senior man nodded his younger colleague’s corner wide, while Eddie Nketiah hit the side-netting at the other end.

The Arsenal man was then thwarted by a crucial, last-ditch intervention from Hart shortly before the break, and Dhanda had an effort destined for the top corner tipped over.

When the breakthrough was finally produced in the second period, it was the Gunners who got it.

Nelson was released through to take on Kamil Grabara and lifted a calm finish over the Liverpool goalkeeper to give his team the edge.

But there is no questioning the winning mentality possessed by Neil Critchley’s charges and they increased their Premier League 2 streak to three victories with a brilliant turnaround.

Brewster levelled the score with a left-footer at the three-quarter point of the match and Hart’s thunderous drive from a set-piece in the final minute sealed a creditable turnaround and snatched three points.

Reflecting on the victory, a delighted Critchley told Liverpoolfc.com: "Over the 90 minutes we were deserving of our victory, especially in the second half we were outstanding.

"Our mentality, the way we played, the boys were excellent and we couldn't have asked any more from them. I'm really proud of them.

"It's always nice to score a last minute winner and it was great for Sam to get it because he typified the performance of the team in the second half.

"He was relentless with his running down the flanks and it was brilliant to see him smash the ball into the net in the last minute."

The U23s boss also had words of praise for Ings who played his first 90 minutes of the season.

He added: "It was brilliant for Danny to play 90 minutes and in the 90th minute he was tackling back in his own corner and winning us a free-kick.

"It was brilliant to see, he did a great job for the team and I'm pleased for him."

Liverpool U23s: Grabara, Whelan, Hart, Phillips, Jones, J Williams, Ejaria, Virtue, Ings, Dhanda, Brewster. Substitutes: Gomes, Firth, Alves, Parker, Johnston.

The 23s won 5-4 on pelanties after the game finished 1-1 after 90 minutes.

George Johnston opened the scoring with an effort from close range on his weaker right foot. Fleetwood equalised with a nice strike from their skipper on the night.

Kelleher saved the first Fleetwood pelanty, taken by an ex-Bloo, which made it all the sweeter. Every pelanty from then was converted, with birthday boy, George Johnston, converting the final spot kick.
