The XBMC thread - What it is, how it works etc...

I see loads of people asking about this, and to be honest I installed it about six months ago after reading about it on here and just kind of flailed around at it not knowing what I was doing, so it's probably best to have a thread explaing what it is, because it's great to use and way better than using torrents imo, so here goes.

You can use it for different things, but essentially I, and I suspect most others, will use it for streaming TV shows and movies, often in HD. You can sign up for lots of individual streaming sites but the idea of XBMC is it's a media centre so you can stream all these films and TV shows through XBMC without having to sign up to all the individual sites.

So once you download it to your device - It'll work on windows, Android, Mac - which you can do here http://xbmc.org/download/ you then need to ' enable ' the programmes that will let you stream stuff. So for example one of the programmes is called Icefilms and that is the one I mainly use. Once that is enable on XBMC you can then click onto it and you'll get a menu like this:

mainicefilmsscreen.png

So you would click TV Shows and you can then search them by Genre, A-Z etc... and it will have HD next to the title if it's available, if not then it'll be DVD quality. So you would click A-Z, scan to B and go down and select, say, Boardwalk Empire. You click it and then get the option for season 1, 2, 3 or 4. Click into season 4 and it'll display all the episodes. Click on the episode you want and it'll display your options for viewing it.

Now to enable these programmes, the easiest way I've found by far is to install the Fusion zip file which will let you enable all the programmes. There are loads of good ones but a few would be Icefilms, Mashup TV, Project Free TV, Navi X. It's not hard to do you simply have to follow these instructions http://www.xbmchub.com/blog/2012/04/24/fusion-easy-addon-installation-for-xbmc/

So you just download XBMC onto your device, follow the instructions in the second link to install the best programmes and then that's it. It should work fine and you can stream whatever you like.

Any more questions I'll have a go at answering or someone should be able to help.

When you first download it, it will look like this, once you enable the programmes they will show up when you click add-ons like in the picture below.

Then your programmes will come up like this:

Forgot to add there are quite a few porn channels and some good ones for streaming the footy or watching boxing, American sports etc...

I've not used it on a tablet, but I think it would. It works on Android devices so I can't see it being a problem. There is a programme called Sportsdevil which has links to all kinds of stuff, best enabling that and trying to stream say a Spanish game or the like and see what you get.

Also worth checking out YouTube if you're really stuck, loads of videos on there helped me when I was trying to install stuff.

I think that goes without saying Vlad, If you haven't got a good connection or a decent device to play it on then it work as well.

I've got a Mac mini hooked up to my telly and 60MB Virgin internet and it's rapid. I've watched the last series of Boardwalk Empire, the last series of Homeland, 12 Years a slave and others over the last few weeks in HD and it's been as easy to put on as Netflix.

I never use Navi X myself.

The thing is that there is that much choice after installing the two wizards that it is nearly impossible to try all of them and you end up using the ones that work for you.

Simon likes Navi x some others may stick to Mashup. I tend to use 1 Channel or Icefilms for TV and films myself.

I'd give a bollock just to get a decent internet connection like yours.

The xunity wizard has been pulled so if you want stuff from xunity you have to add it yourself now,

http://www.xunitytalk.com/showthread.php?4404-Xunity-talk-wizard-missing&p=23291&viewfull=1#post23291

I would also highly recommend setting favourites so you do not have to trawl through loads of stuff to get what you want. You can also change the preselected choices on the home screens.

What has not been mentioned as well is that it can be used to stream already downloaded films etc from a computer.

Are there ways to set them in your programs?

I'm going to have a go at setting this up tonight. I can't say as I expect success!

I'm going to bed soon, but if you need help and no one can provide it I'll have a look tomorrow.  You'll probably find it's easier than you think, I'm no computer wizard, and it took me a while to get the hang of it, but it's the best thing I've found for streaming stuff.
