Two players for every position? Are you sure, Lucas?

Lucas Leiva insists that Liverpool have the squad to be able to compete for honours, and claims that there are two players for every position.

In an interview with the club’s official website, the long serving Brazilian said: “I think it’s clear that we have very good players in every single position - and not just one good player, I would say we have two teams you could put out to get you results.”

While a number of unwanted players departed this summer, reducing the numbers - if not quality - in Jurgen Klopp’s squad, seven new signings came in and Lucas has been impressed with what he’s seen from the new boys and feels this could be a successful year.

“Of course the Premier League is very difficult, but I think the squad we have, with the new players who have made us stronger - hopefully it’s going to be a very good season for the club” he said.

While he’s mostly right in his assessment of two players for every position, he appears to be ignoring the one obvious elephant in the room - the left back position.

After deciding not to pay the asking price for Leicester youngster Ben Chillwell or German international Jonas Hector, Klopp instead opted to simply ignore the one position that many supporters would have argued was the most glaring weakness in the team last season.

Klopp may view his decision to put his faith in the under fire Alberto Moreno and the willing but out of position James Milner as a calculated risk, but to many supporters it’s seen as a huge gamble. Speaking of which, if you like a gamble, Royal Vegas online casino is the place to go. Moreno was seen by many as the catalyst for the second half collapse in the Europa League Final back in May, when the Reds had led at half time only to concede within seconds of the restart before going on to eventually lose 3-1 to Sevilla. Moreno was caught napping for that first goal and endured a torrid time for the rest of the half.

It was not a one off bad performance either, as the Spaniard has often been defensively suspect. It was surprising therefore to see him not only still at the club, but starting the game on opening weekend against Arsenal. The Reds won the game 4-3 but Moreno was appalling in the first half, conceding a penalty and generally being given the runaround by Theo Walcott. Criticism came flooding his way from supporters and TV pundits, including Reds legend Jamie Carragher who had also been vocal in his condemnation of Moreno after the Europa League Final defeat.

Despite a public show of faith from Klopp, Moreno was dropped from the side as soon as Milner recovered from an injury picked up in pre-season, and the former Leeds and Man City man has started the last three games at full back.

Lucas is technically correct when he says the Reds have two players for every position, but supporters would argue that neither one of the two currently being considered for left back are up to the job. If you're going to gamble, Jurgen, stick to Royal Vegas online casino.
