Liverpool’s Most Important Transfer Window in Years

The 2017/18 season may have been another trophyless one for Liverpool but this campaign was different. Top four was ticked off with relative ease - despite some late Champions League-induced wobbles - and, of course, there was the small matter of that European final in Kiev.
 
After a thrilling ride, the final itself was painful to watch but despite the disappointment, most fans seem to have come to terms with the fact there was no shame in losing to Real Madrid. And up until the controversial injury to Mo Salah, it was the team in red who were controlling the game.
 
But rather than lamenting what might have been, the club got straight down to business (signing Fabinho from Monaco), seemingly wishing to capitalise on this season’s improvement and keep the momentum going into next term. In the past, the club has paid for resting on their laurels. In the modern age, football never stops - there is no time to take stock, you have to keep pushing forward to keep yourself afloat.
 
Having qualified for back-to-back Champions Leagues for the first time since 2009/10, sporting director Michael Edwards must ensure that Jurgen Klopp has all the tools available to make another push for the latter stages next year, while also closing the gap to Premier League winners Manchester City. Liverpool are on the verge of becoming a European force once again and this summer could be the most crucial in years.
 
With the Fabinho deal wrapped up so early, and remarkably kept below the radar, you have to wonder what else the club has up their sleeve - the LFC forums will certainly be full of speculation between now and the end of August. The smart money says that Nabil Fekir will be the next to arrive, and with Naby Keïta also on his way, the Reds already look a more formidable force. Add a new goalkeeper into the mix and one or two more quality signings and the club might finally have the strength in depth that has made it difficult to compete on multiple fronts over the last couple of seasons.

It might be too early to tip them to win the league but they could surprise a few critics next year if they continue to do business this way. As well as new arrivals, some departures can also be expected. Emre Can will finally head for the exit door after months of speculation while Simon Mignolet, Alberto Moreno, Nathaniel Clyne, Daniel Sturridge and Danny Ings could all follow him.
 
If Liverpool can get it right this summer, it could give them a platform for many years to come. Staying in the top four, competing for the Premier League title and reaching the latter stages of the Champions League will make them an attractive proposition for the best players. And it will also put them in a position to afford them.
