2017/18 Season Report Card: Dejan Lovren.

I like Dejan Lovren. Always have. Don’t get me wrong, there have been at least two or three occasions when I wrote him off as not being good enough, but show me one man not named Jurgen Klopp who claims he hasn’t and I’ll show you a liar.

Hell, even big Dejan himself has admitted there have been times when he thought he was no good. Perhaps that’s why he tries to mask his insecurities by being overly bullish and running his mouth at the most inopportune of moments?

I thought he was done after the Tottenham debacle in October. I didn’t think he could come back from that but he did. How did he do it? Because whatever anyone wants to say about Lovren, one criticism you can’t throw at him is that he doesn’t have character. He gets knocked down but he gets up again. You’re never gonna keep him down.

The amount of shit he’s had would have broken many players, but he seems to be able to shrug it off and get on with his game. I admire that about him, always have. It’s just that any time he was doing well the implosion was usually just around the corner. Maybe it still is, but when I watch the defenders at other top six clubs they’re all prone to fuck ups as well. I’m taking Lovren over most of them.

Klopp has been very supportive of him and part of that is because of the role he asks Lovren to play and how it is a high risk style that he demands from him. Lovren is expected to be aggressive and try to win the ball at virtually all times, whereas defenders in other teams have the luxury of dropping off and playing it safe and letting their midfielders deal with it.

Lovren himself explained all that in great detail after he was wrongly blamed by many for the 2-0 defeat at Old Trafford. I’m not going through all of his quotes again as I’ve done it several times to the point where I’m even boring myself now, but I thought it was quite revealing and it does put many of his mistakes in a different light.

They’re honest mistakes, a result of trying to do too much and thinking he can win every ball. If that’s what Klopp is drilling into him then no wonder he’s far happier with Lovren than the fans are.

Klopp told Lovren after that Spurs nightmare that if he believed in himself as much as he believes in him then he’d be world class. Towards the end of the season when he was asked to talk about every member of his squad before the CL Final, Klopp actually then referred to Lovren as a ‘world class centre half’ but highlighted the occasional loss of concentration as his main flaw.

There’s no doubt he looked much more secure after the arrival of Van Dijk, who offers a calming presence back there when things get frantic. Lovren needs that as he can be a bit excitable at times. The example I’d use to sum that up is Man City at home in January. We were 4-1 up and Lovren had been fucking monstrous that day.

Late on City got back into it though and our composure went. City’s third goal came when Lovren chased someone out to the wing, then chased him back across the box, and when the ball was played to the opposite flank and then crossed back in, he couldn’t get off the ground as his legs had gone. The ball dropped over him and Bernardo Silva scored.

An honest mistake made with good intentions, but with Van Dijk alongside him I don’t think that happens. Big Virg would tell him to chill out and not go chasing around needlessly at that stage of the game. Many thought Van Dijk’s arrival would end Lovren’s Anfield career, but it might actually be the making of it.

He ended the season in great form and for me was man of the match in the Champions League final. Loads of fans still don’t trust him and would see him replaced, but I’m way beyond that now. I’m not saying there aren’t better centre backs out there, but I guarantee that any list you or I could come up with would be much longer than Klopp’s, as he genuinely thinks Lovren is top drawer.

Best Moment:

Celebrating a goal in front of the Kop by nicking Mo’s celebration.

Worst Moment:

Making that big chinned slobbering goon look like Brazilian Ronaldo back in October.

Rating:

8/10. Possibly generous given the start he had but he gets a bonus point for not letting the Spurs game ruin him and for playing like a boss in the biggest game of his life.

The Future?

The immediate future is him and Virgil. You may not like it but barring injury that’s the way it’s going to be.

He's got a big set of cojones.  I like him for that alone.  I can't see Klopp replacing him at all, it'll be him and Van Dijk as the main central pairing.  There's a cracking partnership to be had there, it's been developing quite nicely.  Kudos to Klopp for following his own instincts with Lovren too and not bowing to fans who frankly mostly know fuck all.

7/10 maximum for me.

I agree that he’s got character and he’s also capable of a run of very good performances.

The shit-the-bed ones scare me though.

I like Lovren. I like his aggression. He seems a nice lad who wants to do well for us too. He’s capable of excellent performances. He doesn’t seem to be brilliant at one particular thing though. Van Dijk is amazing in the air and has pace to burn. Carra was excellent at making last ditch blocks and tackles. Vidic had the enviable combination of strength and aggression. Lovren seems to be about a seven at everything except aggression. That sometimes cost him when he’s playing on world class strikers e.g., Lukaku, Kane. He’s so eager to dominate them but he’s just not quite good enough to do it. He had a good season. He made some mistakes but as this World Cup has shown us, even world class defenders make silly mistakes e.g., Vertonghen against Japan. The ideal situation is to have Lovren as a rotation option. Someone to play the league game after CL. However one thing I learned from last season is that unfortunately Matip is not of the required quality to play regularly for us. I’m hoping this season Gomez will step up. In the meantime, more than happy for Dejan to fill in.

7/10

I like Dejan. He has his faults but I believe him and VVD are a bloody good partnership.

Wouldn't it be interesting if he got the winner tomorrow?

If that happens I'll bump him up to an 11.

If he scores the winner in a penalty shoot-out, is that worth a 12?

I can't warm to him at all I'm afraid, his comeback from the Spurs debacle was impressive though & he deserves to start the season at CB with Van Dijk (who has clearly been the making of him).

6/10 from me.

I’m finally catching these ratings on. They’re out of 20.

Cause this is the most laughable one yet.

So share yours with us then. Based on the above I'm assuming it's a 4?

I'm happy enough with him as first choice alongside VVD and I think he looks better playing as the right CB. I don't see many CBs in the Premiership who are much better then him and I reckon it would cost £50m or so to buy anyone who would be an obvious upgrade. I'd rather we put that cash towards a new keeper and a new forward.

I like Lovren, but he’s clearly a far better player when he’s alongside Big Virj.

I also think he’s been helped moving to the right side of the defence, which was also coincided in his previous best spell alongside Sakho or Toure at the end of Klopp’s 1st season.

Be interesting to see if he’s got to play alongside Matip, Klavan or Gomez for any period next season & if the old Dejan comes back.

His performance tonight was just him in a nutshell. Shite first half and then very good after it.

I thought he was fine first half. Bullying the attack and getting away with it. Must have been watching and learning from Ramos.

Haha he was absolutely terrible, charging around like a puppy chasing his favourite toy.

Very good from half time onwards though. It helped that Croatia took control.

Liverpool's Dejan Lovren makes huge claim after Croatia's World Cup semi-final win over England

Dejan Lovren insists he deserves to be rated as one of the greatest defenders on the planet after helping Croatia to dump England out of the World Cup.

The Liverpool defender will line up in Sunday's final against France after shining in Wednesday night's 2-1 win over Gareth Southgate's side after extra time.

"It's something special for me," Lovren told beIN Sports.

"From my point of view, people said I had a difficult season but I don't agree.

"I took Liverpool to the final of the Champions League. Now with my national team we are in the final.

"I think people should recognise that I am also one of the best defenders in the world and not just talk nonsense."

Lovren admitted that Croatia were second best before they took control after the interval.

"It was quite tough in the first half. We couldn't control the ball," he added.

"They had some good chances but in the second half we did much better. We took spaces on the side and found some good crosses.

"In extra time we showed that even with fatigue we were still able to play our game.

"This is something that we will never forget. People are crying and are happy in our country now. This is something historical for us.

"We will never forget this. We beat our record from 20 years ago. We had this weight on our shoulders all the time. Now people will never forget us.

"Now we have a chance to do something even better and hopefully we can do it on Sunday.

"(Luka) Modric is the best midfield player in the world and if we win this World Cup he deserves the Ballon d'Or."

An extra 0.5 (at least) for the Body Check on Kane last night.
