Re: The Android thread
I might be finally making the leap from house brick to Android with a Desire HD. Looks like everybody on here is in agreement it's a dogs bollocks phone.
Just need to find a decent deal now.
Might've found one through Moneysupermarket though.
£29p/m 600 mins 500 texts unlimited internet.
Any good? Thats on an 18 month contract.

Thats what it says.
I know there can be a bit of a grey area when it comes to mobile internet.
Tariff Type: Anytime X-Net
Free minutes are any time, any network
With new price plans from T-Mobile you choose your mix of minutes and texts, how long your plan is, how much you want to spend each month and a Flexible Booster too.
This tariff includes
* 600 minutes
* 500 texts
* Unlimited Internet
Now you can change your package every month with a Flexible Booster. Do you need more texts, minutes or internet? It's up to you, and you can change it every month. And we won't charge you any extra.
This booster comes with a fair use policy of 1GB a month.

Re: The Android thread
I am an idiot. I have had my Hero for 18 months and still haven't done a firmware update. Skimmed all the posts and don't think I saw any advise on best back up apps. What will I forget to back up by the way?

MyBackup. It's a paid one so you may have to acquire it through different sources.

Re: The Android thread
Am I right in thinking I have to go through the installations one step at a time - i.e 2.2 before I can go to 2.3 (rather than 2.1 straight to 2.3)? Also is this dependant on what provider I am with (Orange)?

It's already out in terms of done and being rolled out. It will be automatic and when you get it depends on your network provider.

Re: The Android thread
My provider has nothing to do with special deals and so on, so it can be anytime then.

Re: The Android thread
No, providers push it out to phones on their networks after they've tested it. Different networks take different periods of time to do so. There's probably a way of downloading it and pushing it out, but you might as well wait. If you brick your phone, your network provider won't want to know.

Re: The Android thread
My HD is from the Orange shop but is a SIM free device (no Orange additions to the handset).
So I'll get my 2.3 as soon as HTC roll it out. Cool.
Also, I really wish I'd waited for the Nexus S. Looks brilliant.

Re: The Android thread
Flash roms with 2.3.....what does that actually entail and will i have to back up all my data beforehand? Whats the advantages of 2.3 over 2.2 anyways, is it just speed or are there a few new features??
As a side note can anyone point me in the right direction for the best twitter app?

You will have to do a backup if you don't want to lose all your data.
2.3 has improved speed, an orange highlight "bounce" when you reach the end of a list, and a cathode ray effect when turning the screen off. All pretty minor stuff.
I use Twidroyd myself.

Re: The Android thread
Just got myself the Desire.
It's a brilliant piece of kit. I was stuck with o2 (get a discount on their broadband and the missus is on o2 with unlimited calls) who are a bit more expensive than the rest of the providers out there, but still got myself a decent deal and only on a 18month contract too.
I've only got 500mb internet allowance, although I don't mind that too much as I'm on wireless at work, home, gf's and mum and dads. So i'm pretty much on wireless 90% of the time. That 3g watchdog looks like a great app though so i'll keep my eye on my usage over the next couple of months.
One thing I have noticed is the battery life drains quite quickly. I think i've had less than 2 days out of it before it needed charging again. Any apps out there that conserve the battery a little better?
