I'm not sure, but Steam does mean you have to be connected to the internet EVERY time you play, and you don't get the editor, or the media comment editor. If you dont use these and are always connected to the internet, you don't need to know this.
I downloaded the game via Steam today, and it can be played offline. When you start the game via your shortcut, Steam will try to connect to the net and fail, you then get the option to start in offline mode.
The Steam download also comes with the 9.1.0 patch installed, so you can choose between the default database, or the patched version, as you would with previous versions with multiple database versions.
I've not yet found the required files and folders so that skins etc can be added, but I've not really had a look yet to be fair.
The idea of activating the game is just a complete farce. If you download via Steam and try to activate through the Steam software, you continually get messages saying the code is invalid, but if you just launch the game, it activates itself. I have yet to enter the activation code before starting, either online or offline.
For those who have downloaded via Steam, the product key can be found by right clicking on the Football Manager selection within the My Games section of the Steam interface.
I will be playing around with the game tonight whilst at work, so will hopefully be able to answer any questions anyone may have that have not already been answered on this thread.

They in your document your old ones will work just copy them over.
Also, as I said, the game can be started while not online, to do this, you need to find the FM.exe file in steamapps\common\football maanger 2009\fm.exe.
Be sure to create a shortcut to this file rather than the one supplied when installing via Steam, as the Steam shortcut attempts to load the Steam interface which attempts to connect to the net.
When I started the game in offline mode earlier, I still had the Steam interface started despite not being connected to the net, but the above negates the requirement to start Steam.
It's ridiculous, I've started a game with Preston, and eight of my first choice team are out injured, and I have five forwards sidelined, so I'm having to play midfielders up front.

Just went to the Tesco by ours to buy it, and it's sold out there! They didn't appear to have any in the Woolies by ours either when I went before, so it looks like I'm off to the Blockbusters on Edge Lane tomorrow morning to get it. I can't really afford it, but I couldn't wait.

Fucking hell, been to the Woolworths, Tesco, Blockbuster, Currys and Comet all by ours and none of them have it in. God help the world if the Tesco or Blockbuster don't have it in stock, because I will go crazy.
