Re: Deus Ex
No way, not if you've got uni work to do!
I failed my C+ module because of that game. It's fucking awesome, it totally sneaks up on you. At first you just think it's okay and then you go to Hong Kong and find yourself walking around a market at night trying to track down rival Triad gangs and before you know it you can't turn it off. You're old allies become your enemies, your enemies become your allies, you choose which side to follow and who to kill/let live. There's also about three different ways to navigate your way through the game, you can get by without even killing anyone if you choose to. The story is what it's all about though, the story just totally draws you in. And also note the absence of the twin towers in the first level, even though it was made in 1999!

Re: Deus Ex
I finish uni 2 weeks today, might give it a go then.
Like I say I played it for about an hour and thought it was quite average but it was a few years back.

Re: Deus Ex
Yeah it's nowt special at first (The New York level) but you just need to stick with it. When you get to Hong Kong everything starts going tits up and you find youself getting hunted by the people you were fighting for.
As I say though it's the story more than anything that draws you in, you actually want to know what's going on rather than just wanting to play the game. It's an iconic game to be honest, check out some reviews on it, I reckon it's probably in most games' mags top-10 of all time. Quote:

Yes the graphics do look dated these days but the gameplay has rarely been approached since in my opinion. (Edit) It's not a sprint and slaughter FPS game at all, although you can play it like that if you want. It's really all things to all men. iirc there are only two characters in the entire game that you actually have to kill. I've played though it killing about ten in total and I've also played through it slaughtering every living thing. Stealth is a big feature but you can use it to avoid conflict, or to instigate it. Although the storyline drives the game, it's extremely free form in the way you go about completing it - you have a number of ways of completing almost every goal and the system of modifying your character and the upgrading weapons give an incredible amount of flexibility to your strategy.

What format is this on? Wasnt there one on the spectrum?
*hunts* ![]() Yup. Unfortunately my emulator cant play the audio cassette that came with it! It had John Pertwee and Frankee Howard acting out the roles!

Re: Deus Ex
Oh man I'm totally hooked.
After getting to grips with the training I've worked my way as far as getting out of the subway station. I'm really engrossed in it already and I'm thinking out a long term strategy for my character, I think I'm heading down the stealth/hacker route with guns for when it gets messy.

I'm trying to avoid spoiling it for you but there are a couple of notable events in the game that you may well not even realise have an alternative possible outcome (because they're the kind of things that are usually straightforward scripted storylining in most games) although you will probably wonder about them. You'll end up playing through it twice, or at least re-playing it from a save point part way through. Heh. Your life is lost my friend. "I spill my drink!" "Needles. I like needles." "Don't talk... or we'll feed you to the karkians..." "I order you to stand in the spotlight and growl at the women like a dog who needs a master."

Re: Deus Ex
Oh man I'm totally TOTALLY hooked.
I've just been arrested and placed in a cell after killing Agent Navarre. So far the story is good, it's starting to twist with Paul's revelations and his working for the NSF. I have the feeling that its about to kick off big style. Robo, I imagine one of those incidents that may have a possible effect on the ending is when Navarre instructs you to kill the guy on the plane? Well I didn't and she did, it was against my morals see.
